Hello,

Today I'm going to share with you the introduction of the optical transport network in the 5G era is. The 5G bearer network is the key to 5G network and services development. OTN/WDW is the most perfect choice for 5G bearer technology.

5G bearer requirements are higher

The fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) will start commercial services, and a new generation of high-speed, mobile, secure, and ubiquitous information infrastructure will be basically completed. "5G commercial, bearer first", the demand for bearer networks in the 5G era is mainly reflected in the requirements for large bandwidth, ultra-low latency, high-precision clock synchronization, and network slicing.

In terms of large bandwidth, 5G has a higher rate and wider bandwidth. The 5G network speed will be about 10 times higher than 4G, and the peak rate increase from 4G’s 100Mbit/s to tens of Gbit/s. Therefore, whether it is connected Incoming equipment capacity, aggregation equipment capacity, or core equipment capacity all require rapid expansion. At the same time, in terms of low latency, VR/AR, autonomous driving, intelligent manufacturing and other services require ultra-low latency.

In terms of clock synchronization, 5G synchronization service requirements include 5G TDD basic service synchronization requirements and system service synchronization requirements. Among them, 5G TDD basic service synchronization requirements are expected to be equivalent to 4G TDD basic services; 1.5μs (low frequency), 500ns (high frequency); synchronization accuracy mainly depends on the requirements of collaborative services, 5G air interface frame length 1ms is 1/10ms of 4G air interface frame 10. It is expected that the synchronization accuracy index will also be reduced, and the specific index is to be studied. The 5G bearer frequency needs to support the clock to hop directly with the services, reduce the intermediate clock processing, and the single-node clock accuracy must meet the ns-level accuracy requirements.

In terms of network slicing, the bearer network naturally supports the bearer requirements of 5G network slicing through a hard pipe method.

OTN/WDM is the optimal solution for 5G bearer

5G will meet three typical application scenarios, including eMBB (mobile broadband enhancement), uRLLC (ultra-high reliability, ultra-low latency communication), and mMTC (large-scale Internet of Things). It is not only necessary to solve the connection between people, but also to meet the interconnection between people and things, and between things and things. Therefore, the bearer network in the 5G era must have large bandwidth, low latency, network slicing, high reliability and openness. Synergy.

The OTN integrated service bearer network in the 5G era is able to meet these requirements. First, the OTN bearer network has low-cost and large-bandwidth technologies. For short-distance incoherent overfrequency transmission technology, low-speed optical devices are used to achieve high-speed transmission; for medium- and long-distance coherent transmission technology, it can be pluggable, low-cost and low-power.

The second is that the flexible multi-level OTN transmission technology can achieve the lowest latency, direct access to the optical layer, and the fronthaul/middle transmission is broken into a tree; ROADM equipment sinks to the convergence layer to accelerate optical layer deployment and improve bearer flexibility. For ODUflex, it can achieve flexible interconnection interfaces and reuse low-cost ETH gray modules; ultra-low latency OTN technology is optimized for 5G bearer scenarios, and the single node latency is maintained at the order of 1μs. In terms of enhanced routing and forwarding functions, it can meet the flexibility requirements of 5G networking.

In addition, the 5G fronthaul is facing the challenge of a shortage of optical fiber resources. In the early stage of 5G, low-frequency networking was adopted, with a single base station, 3 Cells, 6 optical fibers (single fiber unidirectional) or 3 optical fibers (single fiber bidirectional);  The fiber resources required for 3G/4G/5G co-site are accumulated; in addition, the use of high-frequency networking or low-frequency additions during the 5G mature period requires more fiber resources.

In response to this challenge, WDM technology is an effective means to solve the problem of fronthaul. The advantage of the active WDM/OTN solution lies in saving optical fibers, saving costs, and reducing the number of optical modules. Furthermore, the maintenance is simple, and the passive OAD is maintenance-free. The challenge of the active WDM/OTN solution lies in the color light module, the packaging and power consumption must be at the level of white light modules, and in terms of equipment management, wireless device management color light modules. It is  suggested adopting OTN packaging with time delay optimization and inheriting OTN maintenance methods. Therefore, the optical network is the network technology with the lowest latency advantage.

Regarding the medium/backhaul bearer network, OTN has natural large bandwidth, hard pipes, and has both optical layer one-hop direct and OTN delay optimization evolution capabilities, as well as rich management and operation and maintenance mechanisms, and end-to-end OTN groups Net has a strong competitive advantage.

Conclusion

5G bearer network is one of the key factors for the development of 5G networks and services, and OTN/WDM is the best choice for 5G bearer technology.

Truth. I have seen aggregation network elements with multiple 100G interfaces in LAGs/MLAG. One day I shall know a bit more. :)
