Lets say OSN 3500 is operating in TDM mode but the network is Packet Network. How did it send SDH traffic over the Packet Network ?

Dear friend!

The packet network mainly transmits data through MPLS technology. The client signals transmitted by the packet network are mainly Ethernet services. To be compatible with TDM services, CES services can be used to transmit SDH services on a packet network.

The circuit emulation service (CES) helps to solve the problem of insufficient optical fiber resources in the access ring and allows TDM services to be transparently transmitted across the pure packet mode.At the physical layer on the UNI side, the OptiX OSN equipment is interconnected with a CE through the following physical channels for accessing CES services: Channelized STM-1 and E1.

Then what are Pseudowires? Are they different from CES ? What is the role of PWE3 in MPLS technology?

CES is a circuit emulation technology developed to enable TDM/SDH services to be transmitted on packet networks. PWE3 labels are added to TDM/SDH services during encapsulation. and then transmitted over the PW. PWs provide upper-layer links for CES services.

PWE3 is a Layer 2 service bearer technology that mimics the basic behaviors and characteristics of ATM, FR, Ethernet, low-speed TDM, and SONET/SDH services on a PSN network.

What is meant by upper layer links ?

In this case, it's the server layer link.
