Optical Power over DWDM

HiCoins as reward: 0 (problem unresolved)

I have seen a dwdm link such that there are 9 subracks (MDUs) between the source node and the destination node. This implies 9 amplifiers. (there is an amplifier at each subrack)

I used to think that in case of a fibre break, the optical power at the receiver will be reduced by the same factor regardless of the location of the break. In any case, a break means that power from the source is no longer reaching the destination and that channel no longer has a signal from the break to the destination.

However, I observed that the received power dependeds on the number of amplifiers between the break and the receiver - more amplifiers more received power. Could this be a correct observation? Why does the power differ?

Dear friend!
Receive optical power = Transmit optical power at the opposite end + Gain of each amplifier – Fiber link loss – Connector loss – VOA loss – FIU insertion loss

When a fiber cut occurs, the OA board does not work, and the line board cannot receive optical signals.

Thanks!

In case of a break, the line board it does not receive any signals. it receives noise.

The amount of noise varies with the position of the break. that was my query

When the line board cannot receive optical signals, I mean that the line board cannot receive useful optical signals. It is normal for it to receive noise.

You mean the noise level is random?

Hi there!

You mean the noise level is random?

Yes, you can detect the noise in the line by using an accurate meter, for example, when you test fiber with an OTDR.
