Today, I'd like to share with you a knowledge point. The details are as follows:
In optical fiber communication system, the attenuation on fiber would result in receiving level on the receiver, and it’s a basic performance affecting factor.
The fiber system of PON network from OLT in CO to the user’s ONT is called ODN (Optical Distribution Network). ODN is built with fiber cables and optical splitters.
The attenuation on fiber is generally consisted by:
· The attenuation of fiber itself
· The attenuation of fiber splicing point
· The attenuation of fiber connectors
· The attenuation of optical splitters
· The attenuation of optical attenuators
Normally, in generally used G.652 fibers, the attenuation of fiber is about 0.35 dB/km on the wavelength of 1310nm, 1490nm used by GPON network. The bending of fiber could also result in additional attenuations.
A splicing point is normally calculated as 0.1 dB or 0.2 dB.
A fiber connector is normally calculated as 0.5 dB.
The attenuation of optical splitters are variant from the specification. For example, 1:2 splitter has a typical 3.4dB insertion loss. The specification of other size could be found from the vender.
Thank you.
