Why do we prefer EDFA or Raman Amplifiers ? What are advantages and distadvantages of both of them ?

Hi there!

The gain of the Raman amplifier is less than that of the EDFA. Generally, the gain of the Raman amplifier is only 3 dB to 15 dB. In addition, the optical fiber of several kilometers or more than 10 kilometers is required as the pump fiber. However, the EDFA can amplify optical signals at a time of at least 16 dB. The only advantage of using a Raman amplifier is that noise in the optical signal is not increased.
