What is the difference in OLT configuration between FTTH and POL? What are those commands?

Hello, friend!

POL (Passive Optical LAN): a new LAN networking mode based on the PON technology. It optimizes the basic cabling and network structure of the LAN, making the network structure more flat and simple. Inherits the advantages of large bandwidth, high reliability, flattening, easy deployment, and easy management of the PON network. The POL network carries broadband, voice, video, Wi-Fi, CATV, and office services in a unified manner.

The POL solution is widely used in hotels, campuses, enterprise campuses, office buildings, electric power, and transportation scenarios.

The FTTH scenario refers to the fiber to the home scenario, which is also one of the application scenarios of the POL solution.

POL differs from traditional LANs in the following aspects:

  • In the POL networking, the aggregation switch in the traditional LAN is replaced by the OLT. Copper lines are replaced by optical fibers. The access switch is replaced by a passive optical splitter.

  • The ONU provides Layer 2/Layer 3 functions and accesses data, voice, and video services through wired or wireless access.

The configuration of the OLT is the same in both POL and FTTH scenarios. For details, see:

My question is are there any configuration differences on the OLT? That is, the configuration on OLT is the same for both POL and FTTH solutions?

Hi, dear!
The FTTH scenario is one of the POL solutions.
The OLT configurations are the same.

For POL solution, do I need to activate the STP protocol? I don't use that for FTTH.

Hi, dear!
STP is rarely used on the OLT. If STP is planned for the network scenario and service, STP can be configured.
