Today, I want to continue to explain a new topic – ODN engineering and maintenance. Now, I will start to explain ODN engineering. Today, the topic is conventional duct cable routing.
Installation of optical cables in PVC or PE pipes is possible in two ways. These are manual retraction of the optical cable and insertion of the optical cable. Fiber cable is used for manual installation of optical cable. The cable is on a spool and is pulled into the tube with the help of a fiber cable. Care must be taken during installation not to damage the optical cable. If the optical cable is inserted into the tube at an acute angle (the angle is 20 times the diameter of the cable or less). The reserve of the optical cable that is being worked with is laid on the ground in the shape of the number 8. In this way, the entanglement of the optical cable is prevented. If a vehicle is used to unwind the optical cable, care must be taken not to exceed the traction force.
In the underground installation of the ODN network, the reserves of the optical cable are placed in the handholes and manholes. Different types of optical cables are used. These are typically loose tube optical cables.
The installation of optical cables should be done under certain weather conditions. This is prescribed by the manufacturer and should be part of the optical cable documentation. Appropriate lubricants may be used when passing optical cables through PE or PVC pipes. But here, too, care must be taken not to damage the optical cables. Again, this should be prescribed by the fiber optic cable manufacturer.
Another way is to use a machine to insert the optical cable and compressor. The tube should be designed to blow the optical cable, have grooves and be able to withstand the required pressure. The cable should also be intended for installation in a pipe. This way, the optical cable in the tube is installed much faster. Lubricants are also used here.
