NG WDM/OTN Systems
Traditional WDM systems provide only transparent transmission of services; they do not support flexible grooming of services. Therefore, maintaining traditional WDM systems is costly. Due to the lack of complete protection mechanisms, traditional WDM systems cannot meet the service reliability requirement. With respect to system monitoring, traditional WDM systems support only the OSC channel, so they cannot achieve precise management of channels. To overcome the preceding issues, WDM systems must have revolutionary changes. As shown in Figure 2, compared with traditional WDM systems, NG WDM/OTN systems support flexible optical and electrical service grooming. In addition, the use of the ASON/GMPLS plane enables intelligent management of WDM systems.
Perceived from the evolution of WDM systems, the new-generation WDM systems are usually referred to as NG WDM systems. From the point view of standard compliance, Huawei NG WDM systems comply with ITU-T OTN recommendations, such as G.872, G.798, and G.709, so these systems are also known as OTN systems.
- Flexible grooming through OTN cross-connections
- Electrical cross-connections
With ODUk electrical cross-connections, Huawei NG WDM/OTN systems offer flexible electrical circuit grooming and protection capabilities for OTN services. In addition, the substitution of OTU boards with independent tributary and line boards allows mixed transmission of multiple services over the same wavelength, fully utilizing wavelength bandwidth. Upon a change in the service requirements, only tributary boards need to be changed, which protects the investment on line boards.
- Optical cross-connections offered by ROADMs
Huawei NG WDM/OTN systems provide OCh grooming. Wavelength-level grooming is achieved through software without having hardware adjusted.
- Electrical cross-connections
- SDH-like OAM functions
Huawei NG WDM/OTN systems comply with ITU-T. G.709. The use of various OTN overheads achieves precise management of service channels.
- High reliability
The OTN feature provides SDH-like protection capabilities. In addition, the use of the ASON/GPMLS plane offers dynamic protection, substantially reducing the protection costs.
