Both ONU and ONT belong to the client device. The difference is that the ONT is directly at the user end, and there are other networks between the ONU and the user, such as Ethernet. The key to "passive" is that the ODN between the OLT and the ONU is an optical access network without any active electronic devices. Because of this "passive" nature, the pure medium network of PON can avoid the electromagnetic of external devices. Interference and lightning effects reduce line and external equipment failure rates, improve system reliability, and reduce maintenance costs.
