MSTP and SDH

What was wrong with SDH ? Why did we shift to MSTP and then from MSTP to OTN ?

Please explain in simple terms. Give me 5 good reasons for each.

Dear friend！

The pure SDH network only supports SDH service and PDH service. In order to realize the compatibility with customer service, it developed into MSTP supporting Ethernet service and ATM service. Later, WDM network was born due to the needs of service rate and transmission distance. Later, it gradually evolved into an OTN network.

1. SDH supports only a few customer types.

2. SDH equipment does not support the ASON function.

3. The transmission bandwidth of SDH equipment is limited (the ultimate rate is STM-256/40G).

4. The transmission distance of the SDH equipment is short.

5. Compared with MSTP equipment and OTN equipment, SDH equipment is less integrated, does not have the FEC function, and supports coherent features.

What was the most important change that we mode in our network when we shifted to MSTP from SDH ? Any thing in particular ?

From SDH to MSTP, boards such as Ethernet boards, PCM boards, and ATM boards are added on the equipment. At the same time, the software of the SCC module is upgraded to manage the software of these boards.

Before MSTP, we used same WDM infrastructure but we didn't have these new boards ? Is that right ?

The early WDM equipment start to supports Ethernet services and FC services, but only a few customer services are supported.
