Dear friend! SDH equipment can be deployed independently. WDM equipment is required if the distance (more than 100 km) and the rate (more than 10 Gbit/s) are required. When the WDM equipment forwards services to the SDH equipment, the WDM equipment only needs to transparently transmit the SDH services as client-side services without affecting the overhead bytes in the SDH signals.

wait wait. SDH has a different frame structure. How does lets say STM-1 get translated into a WDM Signal ? |
