Hi everyone,

As in MPLS VPN, we are using RD & RT value, RD is added with ipv4  using for uniquely identify each prefix.

RT is using for the identification of VPN instance where to import or export.

But here my question is why we are using two values  ( RD & RT) for VPN an instance, can we use only RD or RT for both functions as to identify uniques prefix & also for VPN target to import or export to specific VPN instance.?

Please comments about this. Thanks in advance.

Hi @LSA

The RT isn't necessary a single number. It is usually a list to provide different VPN services or schemes. In addition, RT is a route attribute and is not placed together with the IP prefix. For this last case it means that the customers would have to use different private spaces and in the case that is the same we won't be able to keep both routes in the vpnv4 table.

In the opposite scenario if we considered to use only the RD this one is not flexible enough when an ISP wants to provide differentiated services for different or even same customer. An example could be one vpn isntance that could communicate with other four instances but with the condition that these other four instances cannot communicate with each other. RD by itself cannot achieve this scenario but RT can.

Hope it helps!

RD:
is used to make the customer prefixes unique on a single PE router (providing address space overlapping), by simply being added to the customer IPv4 address to make a unique VPNv4 address.

RT:
Acts as the VPN identifier in order for all the customer sites on different PEs to be able to communicate.
