1. SD-WAN is more cost-effective than the MPLS does. SD-WAN forwarding path is calculated by the controller and can be distributed to the routers automatically, while the MPLS requires the manual configuration.
2. SD-WAN can be more secure than the MPLS. With the network trends, the public network is going to be more and more insecure, and it requires a unified authentication and authorization in future network accessing. SD-WAN, the greater possibility as part of the IBN or ADN, is going to support that secure requirement.
3. SD-WAN is more flexible than MPLS. As with other SD-X features, SD-WAN drivers the network based on the customer intent, and gives a better forwarding path with the AI and bigdata calculation.

MPLS has some issues

the dedicated label distribution protocol of MPLS and Labels need to be allocated to each LSP, which occupies a large number of resources;

a large amount of bandwidth required for status maintenance protocol and synchronization with the IGP;

the complex deployment and lower scalability;

increasing the linear OPEX (Operating Expense) with scale.
