I. MPLS VPN architecture

1. Provider edge (PE) device
A PE is a carrier border device that is connected to a customer edge device. PEs must support MPLS. On the PEs, VPN instances are used to isolate different VPN clients. A PE runs a routing protocol with a CE to obtain customer routes, generates a VPNv4 prefix for each route, and sends the VPNv4 prefixes to the peer PE through the MPLS VPN backbone network.
2. Provider (P) device
A P is a carrier device that is indirectly connected to a customer device. The P supports MPLS. The P is unaware of VPN customer networks or customer routes. The P is only responsible for carrying labeled data within the backbone network.
3. Customer edge (CE) device
On a customer network, a CE is directly connected to a PE. The CE advertises routes of VPN clients to the PE and learn routes of the other sites in the same VPN instance from the PE.
