Hello everyone,
The serial ports on the PC are data ports used by engineers as many devices need to connect to the serial ports for receiving and transmitting debugging. After laptop manufacturers cancel the RS-232 serial ports, engineers have trouble in logging in to the device for debugging. For example, they cannot log in to the console port of the NGFW. How can I log in to the console port of the NGFW without serial ports?
Don't worry. In addition to the common RJ45 console port, the USG6650/6660/6670/6680 (the NGFW) also provides Mini USB ports. The Mini USB ports are a solution for laptops (PCs) without serial ports.
The Mini USB ports on the NGFW are different from USB ports, but similar as console ports. They are used to connect and configure devices for the local configuration, management, and maintenance of the NGFW. They enjoy higher priority than RJ45 console ports. When both RJ45 and Mini USB ports are connected, only the Mini USB port takes effect.

To use the Mini USB ports, you need to meet the following conditions:
Purchase USB configuration cables (Mini USB Type-B male-USB Type-A male)
You must choose the right type of USB cable among the diversified products on the market. The following figure shows the USB configuration cable that is suitable for the NGFW.

Obtain the Mini USB driver installation package and have it installed on the PC.
Log in to Huawei technical support website (http://support.huawei.com/enterprise), choose Downloads > Enterprise Networking > Security > Firewall & VPN Gateway > USG6600, click the corresponding version, and download MiniUSB_driver_en.zip. This .zip file contains the driver installation package and installation guide. Finish the installation as instructed until the COM port is seen on the PC.

The driver MiniUSB_driver_en.zip supports Windows XP/Vista/Win7/Win8 operating systems.
If there is no MiniUSB_driver_en.zip under a certain version, search for "MiniUSB_driver_en.zip" on the http://support.huawei.com/enterprise.
Prepare the serial terminal program on the PC
Log in to the console port of the NGFW. No matter the console port is a RJ45 port or a Mini USB port, the serial terminal program must be used. A third-party serial terminal software program (such as putty and IPOP) is required only when the PC does not provide any built-in serial terminal program (for example, Windows XP's HyperTerminal). For details about how to use a third-party serial terminal program, see the program-related user guide or Help document.
After the preceding conditions are met, connect the devices according to the following figure.

NOTE: Disable the serial port communication software when you are about to plug in/out the Mini USB configuration cable or power-on/off the device. Otherwise, the corresponding serial port may be unavailable because the PC cannot load the Mini USB driver properly. If such a case occurs, disable the serial port communication software, re-plug the USB configuration cable, and enable the serial port communication software again.
Maybe you may ask: my device is not a USG6650/6660/6670/6680 and there is no Mini USB port. What should I do?
Use a USB-to-serial-port cable and install the driver from the CD that comes with the cable. Please be reminded that the USB-to-serial-port cable and its driver are not Huawei products and their quality is not guaranteed. There might be connection failure problems.
