The USB port supports plug-and-play and hot-swap. Taking advantage in fast connection and support for multiple peripheral devices, USB ports have been widely used. Did you ever ask what functions the USB port has when it is used on a firewall?
Does it support all peripheral devices with USB ports, such as the USB disk, removable hard disk, MP3, MP4, mobile phone, mouse, keyboard, and charger?
No. That is what the USB port on the PC does. The USB port used on the firewall involves more technical tasks. Let me explain more about the functions.
Types of USB Ports
There are various types of USB ports. However, since Huawei firewall was launched, only two types of USB ports are provided:
- Standard USB2.0 port: supported by the USG2000/5000/6000 and NGFW Module.
- Mini USB port: supported by the USG6650/6660/6670/6680 only, with functions similar to the console port.
For details on the Mini USB port, see Move 8: What Should I Do if My Laptop Does Not Have a Serial Port and Cannot Connect to the Device? Use a Mini USB Port.. Here we will introduce the USB2.0 port mainly.
Attributes of USB Ports
Before you use the USB port on the firewall to connect to other devices, you must understand its attributes. The following table illustrates the attributes of the USB port on the firewall.

Functions of USB Ports
- Connect the USB disk. The firewall downloads the files from the USB disk to complete the version upgrade. The firewall currently supports manual upgrade and automatic upgrade through the USB disk:
- Manual upgrade: The upgrade files are stored in the USB disk in advance. After the USB disk is inserted, manually run the upgrade commands to upgrade the system software and configuration file.
- Automatic upgrade: The upgrade files are stored in the USB disk in advance. After the USB disk is inserted, the firewall implements the version upgrade automatically. Through automatic upgrade, the administrator does not need to repeatedly run the upgrade command to upgrade one or multiple firewalls. Using the USB disk simplifies the upgrade process and improves the firewall version upgrade efficiency.
- Connect to 3G/4G LTE data card to enable the firewall to access the Internet through the wireless network. The following data cards are supported:
- 3G data card: E180, EC169/EC169C and ET128/ET128-2
- 4G LTE data card: E3276s-861, E3276s-150, E3372s-153 and E8278s-602
For different products and different versions, the functions of USB ports are different.
