Modulation schemes

LTE uses the following inner modulation schemes:

Downlink: QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM, 256-QAM (Release 12)
Uplink: QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM (depending on the UE)

A lower QAM is more robust against noise and interference, while a higher QAM offers a higher data rate.
