Internet Access via the MPLS VPN backbone

Hi guys,

 

I have been simulating the attached scenario to get access to Internet following the way of HCDP-BITN book, Chapter 2 Internet Access via the MPLS VPN backbone pag. 227., but it works partially. PE1 interface connected to RTA is not bound to any VPN. PE1 and CE1, and PE2 and CE3 change routing information with RIP. PE1 and PE2 run MP-BGP. CE1 and CE3 belong to VPNA and they can ping each other successfully. CE1 can access the internet and can ping 8.8.8.8 (on INTERNET router) through gateway RTA successfully. However, CE3 can't ping 8.8.8.8. If I do tracert 8.8.8.8 on CE3 the trace gets stuck at PE2. Where could the problem be? I have made lots of changes but I cannot find the problem.

I have attached the device configurations and also the .topo file.

what's the protocol between PE1 and RTA and 8.8.8.8.  also rip?  and 8.8.8.8 is also in VPNA?

PE1 and RTA don't run a routing protocol between them, PE1 has a static route to RTA

 

ip route-static vpn-instance vpna 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 100.100.100.2 public

 

and RTA has two static routes two CE1 and CE2

 

ip route-static 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.252 100.100.100.1
ip route-static 10.3.1.0 255.255.255.252 100.100.100.1

 

and 8.8.8.8 isn't in VPN A, only PE GE0/0/0 interfaces are bound to VPN A.

I think that  " CE1 can access the internet and can ping 8.8.8.8 (on INTERNET router) through gateway RTA successfully" it's because CE1 and INTERNET can communicate through a common transponder,CE1 directly connecte the PE1,so it does not matter with VPNA;Other,the CE3 is in VPNA, but INTERNET is not,that should be the reason why they can't ping each other successfully.

I think that's not the reason because CE1 is also in VPN A since PE1 GE0/0/0 is bound to VPN A, the same as PE2. And following the HCDP-BITN book CE3 should access the INTERNET... but I don't know where is the problem...

Sorry I don't understand the function very well.I tried to modify the configuration on PE1,CE1 and CE3 can ping INTERNET successfully.I do not know wether reasonable enough,configuration as follows:

the original configuration about route-static:

ip route-static 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.252 vpn-instance vpna 10.1.1.1
ip route-static 10.3.1.0 255.255.255.252 vpn-instance vpna 3.3.3.3
ip route-static vpn-instance vpna 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 100.100.100.2 public

the modified configuration :

ip route-static 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.252 vpn-instance vpna 10.1.1.1
ip route-static 10.3.1.0 255.255.255.252 vpn-instance vpna 10.3.1.1 // according to the next-hop ,PE1 find the out-interface in VPN routing table

ip route-static 100.100.100.4 255.255.255.252 100.100.100.2  // the route-static to INTERNET
ip route-static vpn-instance vpna 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.1.1.2 public

I have tried with your configuration but it didn't work, I think it lacked a default route to the internet in the public routing table on PE1. Finally I left PE1 with this configuration

 

ip route-static 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 100.100.100.2  // the route to the internet for CE3

ip route-static 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.252 vpn-instance vpna 10.1.1.1 // the route to CE1 from internet

ip route-static 10.3.1.0 255.255.255.252 vpn-instance vpna 10.3.1.1 // the route to CE3 from internet

ip route-static vpn-instance vpna 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 100.100.100.2 public // the route to the internet for CE1

 

And now CE1 and CE3 can ping 8.8.8.8 successfully. I captured the packets and an interesting thing is that in the way from CE3 to INTERNET the packets are not labeled, it is traditional IP forwarding, however in the way from the INTERNET to CE3 the packets are labeled, it is label forwarding.
