Hello,

I was working in a project, and there we needed to add REG sites to improve OSNR performance.

So my supervisor asked me to install TNG1M520SM OTU Board for OSN 9800 M12 Series, and then install a CFP in it's ports.

Now if we look into an REG site's structure, it looks like:

REG Site

It has OTU Board, along with M40 D40, FIU, SCC, Amplifier boards, but my supervisor asked me to only add OTU as an REG site along with a CFP.

So I am confused why we didn't add any other boards for REG site, what's the role of CFP in Regeneration? And How exactly does OTU board regenerate the incoming signals?

Hi there!
The function of the REG station is to relay and amplify the received signals. The cross-connect board and tributary board are not required because it does not need to add or separate services to the local device.

There are two types of relay stations: optical relay and electrical relay. If the OSNR value of line signals is low, the electrical regeneration mode is not suitable. The line board is the core of the electrical regeneration site, and the CFP optical module is the core of the line board.

For the process of signal regeneration, see the following figure of NS4 board:

NS4

The NS4 board implements the regeneration of one channel of optical signals. The wavelengths at the receive and transmit ends of the board are the ITU-T G.694.1-compliant DWDM wavelengths that carry OTU4 optical signals.

The optical receiving module receives the optical signals to be regenerated through the IN optical interface, and performs O/E conversion.

The signal processing module performs decoding, overhead processing and encoding of signals. During the process, the reshaping, regenerating and retiming based on electrical signals are performed, and the signals are encapsulated into OTN frames.

After encoding, the signals are sent to the optical transmitting module. After performing E/O conversion, the module sends out the OTU4 signals at DWDM standard wavelengths that comply with ITU-T G.694.1.

The optical signals are output through the OUT optical interface.

Thank you!

My dear friend, the NS4 board you stated here is a Line board I think, but I was asking about how OTU board acts as a regenerator point? Because in our project we installed OTU board for regeneration purpose.

OTU boards include tributary boards, line boards, and tributary-line boards. What type of board are you talking about? Can you provide the board model?

As per my observation, you could improve OSNR performance by two ways.

1. install regeneration sites between fiber hop where fiber loss is greater than 40db
2. add regeneration at OTU layer

You have done both to improve the OSNR performance -means your earlier OSNR level was poor.

But I think you did first one -was it necessary to 2nd one-then why? -could save some capex.

We installed an OTU board for regeneration. Is there any difference between installing a regeneration site and installing an OTU board?

The main functions of the OTU board are wavelength conversion and service convergence. It can also implement the regeneration function, but it is recommended that the line board be used as the regeneration board.
