15  Interface Management

15.1  VLAN

15.1.1  VLAN

Context

After an interface is added to a VLAN, the interface can forward packets of the VLAN. Devices in a VLAN can directly communicate with each other, whereas devices in different VLANs cannot. Broadcast packets are forwarded within a VLAN.

Procedure

  • Creating a VLAN
    1. Choose Interface Management > VLAN > VLAN.

      Figure 15-1  VLAN
      bcb72a13039a4ac1aa0216c292db0ca9

    2. In the VLAN List area, click Create. In the Create VLAN dialog box that is displayed, set parameters described in Table 15-1.

      4b623272cca5413ea893a89e6adc0128

    3. Click OK. The VLAN is added to the VLAN list.

To create more VLANs, repeat steps 2 and 3.

Table 15-1  Parameters for creating a VLAN

      Parameter

      Description

      VLAN ID

ID of the VLAN to be created.

      Description

      Description of the VLAN.

      Link type

      Interface type.

For details about interface types, see Table 15-2.

      Interface Selection

Adds or deletes interfaces that allow packets from the VLAN to pass through. The procedure for adding or removing interfaces is as follows:
      • Adding interfaces: Select interfaces in the Available Interfaces area, and click 38859609a49043b29e50773ca4d82a3a to add the interfaces to the Added Interfacesarea.
      • Removing interfaces: Select interfaces in the Added Interfaces area, and click 23eb147cdc924c9eb271e80c57bef9cb to remove the interfaces back to the Available Interfaces area.
      Table 15-2  Interface types

      Interface Type

Method of Processing Received Untagged Frames

Method of Processing Received Tagged Frames

      Method of Sending Frames

      Application

      Access interface

Accepts an untagged frame and adds a tag with the default VLAN ID to the frame.

      • Accepts a tagged frame if the VLAN ID carried in the frame is the same as the default VLAN ID.
      • Discards a tagged frame if the VLAN ID carried in the frame is different from the default VLAN ID.

Removes the tag from a frame and sends the frame.

An access interface connects a switch to a PC and can be added to only one VLAN.

      Trunk interface

      • Adds a tag with the default VLAN ID to an untagged frame and accepts the frame if the interface permits the default VLAN ID.
      • Adds a tag with the default VLAN ID to an untagged frame and discards the frame if the interface denies the default VLAN ID.
      • Accepts a tagged frame if the interface permits the VLAN ID carried in the frame.
      • Discards a tagged frame if the interface denies the VLAN ID carried in the frame.
      • Removes the tag from a received frame and sends the frame if the VLAN ID carried in the frame is the same as the default VLAN ID and permitted by the interface.
      • Directly sends a received frame if the VLAN ID carried in the frame is different from the default VLAN ID but permitted by the interface.

A trunk interface can be added to multiple VLANs to send and receive frames for these VLANs. A trunk interface connects a switch to another switch or to a router.

      Hybrid interface

Sends a received frame if the interface permits the VLAN ID carried in the frame. A specified command can be used to determine whether a hybrid interface sends frames with or without tags.

A hybrid interface can be added to multiple VLANs to send and receive frames for these VLANs. A hybrid interface can connect a switch to a PC or connect a network device to another network device.

  • Modifying a VLAN
    1. Choose Interface Management > VLAN > VLAN.
    2. In the VLAN List area, click c673cfe21533480fb3563e3140b487db corresponding to a VLAN.
