18.13 Example for Configuring Inter-VLAN Layer 3 Roaming

Networking Requirements

As shown in Figure 18-13, two APs are deployed in a campus network to provide WLAN services for employees of two departments, and are managed and controlled by an AC. The AC dynamically assigns IP addresses to the APs and STAs. The employees of the two departments belong to different VLANs, that is, AP1 belongs to VLAN101 and AP2 belongs to VLAN 102. The APs communicate with the AC through a Layer 3 network, and the APs and AC belong to the management VLAN 100.

The department requires that services should not be interrupted when a STA moves from AP1 to AP2.

Configuration Roadmap

The configuration roadmap is as follows:

Use the configuration wizard to configure the AP to go online on the AC.
Use the configuration wizard to configure the WLAN service on the AC.
Deliver the WLAN service to the AP and verify the configuration.

Procedure

Configure the access switch and aggregation switch.
# On the access switch, add GE0/0/1 to VLAN 100 and VLAN101, and add GE0/0/2 to VLAN 100 and VLAN 102. The default VLAN of GE0/0/1 and GE0/0/2 is VLAN 100.
# On the aggregation switch, add GE0/0/1 to VLAN 100, VLAN 101, and VLAN 102, GE0/0/2 to VLAN 100, GE0/0/3 to VLAN 101 and VLAN 102, create VLANIF 100, and configure an IP address 192.168.100.2/24 for VLANIF 100.
# Configure an IP address pool on VLANIF 101 and VLANIF 102 of the aggregation switch to assign IP addresses to STAs.
# Configure DHCP relay on the aggregation switch and set the IP address 192.168.100.1/24 of VLANIF 100 on the AC as the DHCP server address.
Configure the APs to go online on the AC.
1. Choose Configuration Wizard > Configuration Wizard > AP Online Configuration Wizard. The AP Online Configuration Wizard page is displayed.
2. Configure the Ethernet interface.
  # On the Configure Ethernet Interface page, click next to GigabitEthernet0/0/1 to add the interface to VLAN 100 in tagged mode.
  
  # Click Next.
3. Configure the virtual interface.
  # Click Create on the Configure Virtual Interface page. The Create Virtual Interfacepage is displayed.
  # Configure an IP address 192.168.100.1/24 for VLANIF 100.
  
  # Configure an IP address 192.168.101.1/24 for VLANIF 101 and an IP address 192.168.102.1/24 for VLANIF 102 in the same way.
  # Click Next.
4. Configure DHCP.
  # Click Create on the Configure DHCP page. The Create IP Pool page is displayed.
  # Configure a global IP address pool named huawei.
  
  # Click Next.
5. Configure the AC.
6. Confirm the settings.
  On the Confirm Settings page, confirm that the settings are correct and then click Finish.
Configure option parameters for the DHCP server.
# Choose IP Service > DHCP > IP Pool, select the address pool named huawei, and click .
# Set the parameter for Vendor-defined.
Configure a static route.
# Choose IP Service > Route > Static Route Configuration and click Create to create a static route.
Configure the WLAN service.
1. Choose Configuration Wizard > Configuration Wizard > WLAN Configuration Wizard. The WLAN Configuration Wizard page is displayed.
2. Select Common WLAN Service and click Next.
3. Add the APs.
  # Click Create on the Configure AP page. The Create AP page is displayed.
  # Set AP type to AP6010DN-AGN and MAC address to 60de-4476-e360 on the Create AP page to add AP1.
  
  # Add AP2 in the same way.
  # Select an AP and click Next after the AP status becomes normal.
4. Configure the radio.
  # Select 2.4 GHz.
  # Create a radio profile named radio. Create a WMM profile named wmm and use the default settings in the profile.
  
  # Click Next.
5. Configure the WLAN service on AP1.
  # On the Configure WLAN Service page, click Create to create a service set.
  
  # Create a traffic profile named traffic.
  
  # Create a security profile named security.
  
  # Create a WLAN-ESS1 interface.
  
  # Select the created traffic profile, security profile, and ESS interface.
  
  # Click OK and then click Next.
6. Configure the WLAN service on AP2.
  NOTE:
  On the WLAN configuration wizard, the procedure you follow to configure AP1 is the same as that to configure AP2. The only difference is that some parameters have different values. This example only lists configuration steps in which different parameter values must be set for AP2.
  # Create a WLAN-ESS2 interface.
  
  # Select the created traffic profile, security profile, and ESS interface.
  
  # Click OK and then click Next.
7. Confirm the settings.
  # Confirm that the settings are correct, and then click Finish. In the message that is displayed, confirm that the configuration is to be delivered to the AP.
Verify the configuration.
1. The WLAN with the SSID huawei is available for the STA.
2. The STA can associate with the WLAN and obtain an IP address 192.168.101.x/24 and its gateway address is 192.168.101.1.
3. Click Terminal Management > Terminal Management > STA Roaming Track. You can view the roaming status of the STA.
