HiCoins as reward: 0 (problem unresolved)
Hi guys,

I was wondering it I have a Huawei fibre ONT that has WiFi and ethernet ports, with slot for USB and everything, how would one configure this device to be your WAN router, instead of having an extra router that has to connect to it via ethernet.

Is this at all possible?

I’ll get the model number shortly, but I need to crawl behind cupboards and take it off the wall to fine it.

Hi friend.

I do not know the specific model of your device. If you configure the WAN port on the ONT, use the HG8245H as an example to configure the WAN port on the web page.

1. In the navigation tree on the left, choose WAN > WAN Configuration. In the pane on the right, click New. In the dialog box that is displayed, set Mode to Route WAN, as shown in the following figure.

2. Click Apply.

Sorry guys, I had a look at my ONT options, and there is no option to configure the WAN directly.

It’s an EG8245H5

I think it may have been locked down by custom firmware, but I will confirm with screenshot and further information. I’m at work and don’t have access to the device now.

Under WAN option, it doesn’t have any configuration or management options. The fibre connection goes straight into the fibre port, and I am supposed to receive an IP address from my ISP via IPoE (DHCP) but I have an external B535-65a that has to connect by cable to port 1 on the ONT to establish the connection.

To me it doesn’t make sense having an ONT with WiFi and Ethernet ports, but it simply bridges to an external router. Can you please tell me how and where to find the software version and see if it is not a custom rom flashed by our fibre provider?

I suspect they wanted to avoid us using it as a router also, because we have like a million ISPs in South Africa and each of them want to “activate” and “migrate” the line each time you change providers.

If I’m not making sense, please let me know what you find unclear? All I know is that the router has the network map, showing connected devices. The link to “internet” is green, but the option to configure WAN doesn’t exist. Do you think our fibre provider had a modified ROM to prevent people from messing with things

Hi friend.
Do you mean that you do not have the option to set WAN after logging in to the web interface of your device?
You want to configure the WAN, right?
