Huawei Campus OptiX Solution (4): POL

Hello, everyone!

Today, I will continue to write about the Huawei campus optiX solution, about POL. Let’s get started.

POL can use different PON standards:

  • BPON (Broadcast Passive Optical Network),

  • GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network),

  • XG(S)-PON (10 Gigabit asymmetric or symmetric Passive Optical Network), etc.

The POL uses a typical GPON standard. It allows max 2.5 Gbps in downstream direction on the 1490 nm and 1.25 Gbps in upstream direction on the 1310 nm. It is a P2MP topology, and it can cover up to 40 km. OLT is located in the main equipment room, ODN is composed of two segments – vertical and horizontal cabling. ODN can have one or two levels for optical splitters. One optical PON port, usually, is divided to a maximum of 32 ONUs.

ONUs are located on the user’s side. It can have different interfaces, because of that, it can allow triple-play services – HSI (GE, FE or combination ports), VoIP (POTS ports), IPTV (GE, FE or combination ports) or CATV (RF port). Some ONU supports PoE (Power over Ethernet).

This solution uses SM optical fibers – OS1 or OS2 (low water peak optical fibers), optical fiber use prepolished/splice optical connected or usually factory terminated optical connectors (for example, typical optical connectors are SC/PC, LC/PC, SC/APC, or LC/APC). The OLT uses DFB (Distributed Feedback) lasers, on the other side, ONU uses FB (Febry-Perot)lasers.

In the next figure, we can see POL (right side, yellow line) and traditional LAN (left side, blue line). Campus OptiX consists IP and POL, as we can see in the below figure, on the right side.

Next figures shows equipment for campus optiX - core switch (e.g. cloudeEngine S series: 288), OLT (e.g. EA5800-X2, EA5800-X7, etc.), ODN (e.g. FIU2117, FAT2138,etc.), ONUs (e.g. EG8247H5, T672E, P612E, P813E,etc.), management system (eSight), etc.
