Hello, everyone!
Today, I will continue to write about the Huawei campus optiX solution. This is the second article about this topic, and now, I will explain OLAN.
OLAN is short for Optical Local Area Network. These are modern optical LANs. The introduction of optical cables in most of the campus networks is a significant improvement. The use of optical cables introduces the following advantages:
1. immunity to interference;
2. no range and bandwidth limitations;
3. smaller volume and weight of cables;
4. one optical fiber for all services;
5. there is no need for a telecommunication room;
6. there is no need for active equipment in the telecommunication room, which means no power supply, UPS devices, air conditioning, grounding, etc;
7. significantly reduced electricity consumption, etc.
In the next figure, we can see the advantages of using the new solution.

OLAN solution can be:
FTTO (Fiber To The Office),
FTTD (Fiber To the Door), and
POL (Passive Optical Local Area Network).
FTTO is a solution that uses Ethernet switches, optical cables and UTP cables for connecting to hosts. This solution is similar to FTTD. FTTO uses SM optical fibers with usual factory terminated optical connectors. The type of SM optical fiber is OS2. This type of optical fiber can carry an optical signal of 100 GHz up to 5 km. For two-way communication, the switches use two SM optical fibers. Sometimes composite cables can be used for these realizations. This achieves a remote power supply to the device.
FTTD is a solution that uses MCs (Media Converter), optical cables and UTP for connecting to hosts. This solution is similar to FTTO. FTTD uses MM optical fibers with usual factory terminated optical connectors. The type of MM optical fiber is usually OM2, OM3 or OM4. The source is the VCSEL at a wavelength of 850 nm. There are different types of MC. Typical MC has four GE ports, because of that, we have to use MC with more GE ports than four GE ports or we have to use extra switches. Sometimes composite or hybrid cables can be used for these realizations.
This is the end of this topic. I will continue to write about this topic in the next article >> Huawei Campus OptiX Solution (3): POL.
Thank you!
