Hello, everyone!
Today, I will start to write about the Huawei campus optiX solution. This is IP + POL solution. OLAN is the current solution today, especially POL. That is why this is an important and very popular topic.
CAN is an acronym for Campus Area Network, usually, only the term campus is used. It is a computer network limited to a specific geographical area. CAN consists of several LAN networks. Most CAN networks have a connection to the public Internet. Campus networks are networks required at airports, hotels, companies, schools, colleges, hospitals, etc.

The traditional solution consists of the main equipment room or computer room, there is at least one telecommunication room (telecommunication closet) on each floor of the building, it depends on the area to be covered. In the main equipment room, there is a core switch, servers, etc. There is an aggregation and/or access switch in the telecommunication room. All this equipment, in both rooms, requires:
1. sufficient space for installation and normal operation of the equipment;
2. power supply of all equipment;
3. sufficient UPS to power all equipment;
4. providing air conditioning for normal operation of the device;
5. grounding of all active devices, as well as all cables that have metal elements, etc.
The connection between the main equipment room and the telecommunication room is called vertical cabling, the connection between the telecommunication room and the work areas (in offices) is called horizontal cabling. In traditional LAN or campus networks, all these connections are realized using cables with copper conductors - UTP cables. In addition, coaxial and telephone cables are used to provide video and voice services.
Disadvantages of the traditional solution:
1. providing sufficient space for telecommunication rooms;
2. provision of power supply and UPS device for each telecommunication room;
3. providing air conditioning for each telecommunication room;
4. providing grounding for all devices and cables with metal elements;
5. electricity consumption;
6. a large number of cables - UTP, coaxial, telephone cables. Which are large in diameter and weight. In addition, these cables have a limited range (e.g. <100 m for UTP cables) and bandwidth.
These traditional networks are complicated to maintain and hard to expand or upgrade the cabling system.
This is the end of this topic. I will continue to write about campus in the next article >> Huawei Campus OptiX Solution (2): OLAN.
Thank you!
