Huawei and Abraxas Together Draw a Blueprint for “Cloud Fabric”

Switzerland, spanning an area of only 40,000 km2, is well-known for its affluence, developed economy, and one of the highest standards of living in the world. The country, as the “Roof of Europe”, encompasses a great diversity of landscapes with magnificent mountains, vast forests, and rippling lakes. At the Huawei Network Congress (HNC) Europe 2015 held in Lisbon, Portugal on 29th and 30th, 2015, Abraxas Informatik AG (Abraxas), based in Switzerland, and Huawei gathered together to share their success story regarding Huawei Cloud Fabric Fully-Connected Data Center SDN Solution. Together they have launched an SDN-ready multi-tenant cloud data center network solution in front of more than 500 of Huawei’s customers and media from Europe.

Abraxas, a major Information and Communications Technology (ICT) integrator and Cloud Service Provider (CSP) in Switzerland, offers long-term network interconnection and data center cloud services, as well as network solution consulting and deployment services, Abraxas principally serves the government sector and enterprises.

Abraxas is right in the middle of global megatrends: cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data.Rapidly changing services have created unprecedented challenges to data centers. A growing number of data center services require more cabinets and larger equipment rooms. This, however, can be quite costly and time-consuming. With the increasing complexity of data center construction and maintenance, more and more enterprises are looking to companies like Abraxas to accommodate their cloud service needs.

With great opportunities come great challenges: Increased demand for cloud services means Abraxas had to serve a larger number of tenants. Huawei and Abraxas Co-Build a Fully Virtualized, SDN-Ready Cloud Data Center Network

After a comprehensive evaluation of providers, Abraxas picked Huawei to help address its challenges. Huawei’s Cloud Fabric Data Center Network Solution is able to build a fully virtualized fabric using Huaweis CloudEngine series high-performance data center switches, enabling Abraxas to construct a highly efficient, reliable, and scalable multi-tenant cloud data center.

Using Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL), Huawei’s Cloud Fabric allows for a super-large Layer 2 fabric that connects to vast quantities of servers in a data center. By leveraging Ethernet Virtual Network (EVN),Huawei’s Cloud Fabric implements Layer 2 interconnection among the three data centers of Abraxas, across an IP Wide Area Network (WAN). In addition, using Virtual System (VS) technology, Huawei’s Cloud Fabric allows “1:N” virtualization on core switches, virtualizing one core switch into multiple logical switches.

 

Three Core Benefits of Huawei’s Cloud Fabric

1.         A Fully Virtualized Fabric Flexibly Schedules VM Resources

Huawei’s Cloud Fabric supports a variety of virtualized fabrics. TRILL, a standard defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), extends Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS) to implement Layer 2 routing. TRILL supports a super-large Layer 2 fabric with more than 500 nodes. A TRILL-based super-large Layer 2 fabric allows connections to a massive number of servers while also supporting flexible Virtual Machine (VM) deployment.

EVN enables Layer 2 interconnection across an IP WAN, virtualizing three data centers into a single super-large IT resource pool. Additionally, VMs can freely migrate across data centers.

The fabric built by Huawei through TRILL and EVN has helped Abraxas build an ultra-large cross-DC Layer 2 network, implementing flexible deployment and scheduling of VM resources.

2.         “1:N” Virtualization of a Core Switch Lowers the TCO

VS supports 1:N virtualization on network devices, virtualizing a single physical device into multiple logical or virtual devices. The VS, as a VM on the device, can be configured, managed, and maintained as a single device.Each VS runs independently and is isolated from other VSs. Using VS technology to divide the core switch, Abraxas is able to implement various services and achieve service isolation through different Virtual Switches (vSwitches),enhancing network reliability and security. VS technology helps Abraxas lower its Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for network equipment and substantially improves network resource utilization.

3.         A Smooth Network Evolution into SDN Ensures a High ROI

Huawei’s CloudEngine series switches are ready for Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN). VXLAN supports data centeroperations with up to 16 million tenants. Huawei’s CloudEngine series data center switches work seamlessly with Huawei’s Agile Controller. Together, they help Abraxas build an SDN-based data center and achieve the automatic deployment of tenant services. Huawei’s CloudEngine switches provide an abundance of open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), and are thus capable of connecting to other mainstream cloud platforms and SDN controllers. As a result, customers’ existing network can smoothly evolve into SDN withoutbeing reconstructed, ensuring a high Return on Investment (ROI).

With an advanced hardware architecture, Huawei’s CloudEngine 12800 is currently the world’s best-performing core switch. The entire device supports a switching capacity of up to 160 Tbps through its high-density design of 100GE and 40GE line-speed cards, meeting Abraxas’ need for long-term network capacity expansion while ensuring a high ROI.
