How does HPC work?

Featured Answers

HPC (High-performance computing) solutions have three main components:

computing

Net

Storage

To create a high-performance computing architecture, the compute servers are networked in a cluster. The software programs and algorithms run simultaneously on the servers in the cluster. The cluster is networked to the data warehouse to capture the output. Together these components work seamlessly to complete a diverse set of tasks.

To function at peak performance, each component must keep pace with the others. For example, the storage component must be able to feed and ingest data to and from computer servers as quickly as it is processed. Also, network components must be able to support high-speed data transport between computer servers and data warehouses. If one component cannot keep up with the rest, the performance of the entire HPC infrastructure suffers.

HPC means high-performance computing, it connects a large number of servers and storage devices to a high-performance network to construct a large-scale computing cluster. Compute nodes in the cluster collaborate with each other to process multiple subtasks in parallel. Parallel computing helps solve the largescale model calculation and complex subject research that are difficult for common computers and servers.

HPC scenario: The computing workload increases rapidly, requiring storage systems to provide sufficient bandwidth and stable performance to support rapid and massive data access. However, a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) client can establish only one link with the storage cluster then it shares files using the NFS protocol. This restricts the data read/write amount of the storage system.

HPC is widely used in supercomputing centers, universities, scientific research institutes, and other institutes in various fields such as manufacturing engineering, geophysics, weather forecasting, oil and gas exploration, biological analysis, life sciences, astrophysics, animation rendering, energy, and materials.
