How to troubleshoot the faults about fiber detection

I would like to share with you this topic which describes how to troubleshoot the faults that occur during line fiber quality detection.

Question 1

What Can I Do If the Fiber Doctor Window Is Abnormal When I Access the Window on the NMS?

Problem Description

I choose Configuration > WDM Optical Management > Fiber Doctor from the main menu of the NMS, or right-click an inter-site long fiber in the main topology view and choose Detect Fiber Quality to open the Fiber Doctor window. However, the following issues occur:

      The Fiber Doctor window is blank or starts slowly.

      The Fiber Doctor window responds slowly after no operation is performed in the window for half an hour.

Problem Analysis

      Because of the cache mechanism of the Fiber Doctor window, it may take 15 seconds to start the Fiber Doctor window or restart the window after no operation is performed in the window for half an hour. User operations may be affected during the startup of the Fiber Doctor window.

      The connection proxy is set on the Windows Internet Explorer used to access the NMS. Access to the Fiber Doctor system is restricted.

Solution

  1. Wait for about 15 seconds during the startup of the Fiber Doctor window. Perform operations only after the window is started.

  2. Check the proxy settings of Internet Explorer.

    1. Choose Tools > Internet Options. The Internet Options page is displayed.

    2. Click the Connections tab and click LAN settings. The Local Area Network (LAN) Settings page is displayed.

    3. In the Proxy server area, if 'use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections)' is selected, click Advanced. The Proxy Settings page is displayed.

    4. In the Exceptions area, add the IP address of the NMS server to the 'Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with': list. Use semicolons (;) to separate IP addresses.

    5. Click OK.

  3. If the Fiber Doctor window remains blank for a long time, close the window and open it again.

Question 2

What Can I Do If a Failure Message Is Displayed but No Failure Cause Is Displayed After I Start Fiber Quality Detection and a Success Message Is Displayed After I Restart the Detection?

Problem Description

After I start fiber quality detection in the FD system, a failure message is displayed. After I move the cursor to the detection record, no failure cause is displayed. After I restart the detection, a success message is displayed.

Problem Analysis

During the first detection, the system time of the client may be changed. As a result, the FD system regards that the client is unstable and determines that the operation times out, and therefore displays a failure message falsely. In this case, even if the detection is successful, a failure message will still be displayed but no failure cause will be displayed. After detection is restarted, the system time of the client is stable and therefore a success message is displayed.

Solution

Do not change the system time of the client during fiber quality detection.

Question 3

I Cannot Switch to the Opened Window by Selecting the Tab from Tab List After I Access the Window on the NMS

Problem Description

On the NMS, choose Configuration WDM Optical Management > Fiber Doctor from the main menu. The Fiber Doctor window is displayed. After you click the List ALL Tab drop-down list box on the right of the NMS client, the tabs of other opened windows are not displayed, as shown in the following figure. Therefore, the opened window cannot be quickly switched through the tab list.

Problem Analysis

The GUI of the fiber doctor system is an embedded Web interface. This problem is caused by the embedded browser of the JRE.

Solution

  1. Click Restore on the right of the NMS client to zoom out the Fiber Doctor window.

  2. Click the List ALL Tab drop-down list box on the right of the NMS client and select the tab to be switched, and then quickly switch to the opened window.
