How to replace the UMPT board on a BBU3900

This section describes the precautions and procedure of how to replace the UMPT board on a BBU3900 or BBU3910. Please see more details as you read below.

PREREQUISITES


1. The type of faulty board was confirmed. The confirmation method is as follows:



  • If a board is faulty and cannot be queried online, query information about the board offline on the U2000 by following the instructions in Querying Inventory Data.


2. A new board has been prepared. Focus on the following when selecting new boards:


  • An SRAN7.0 UMPTa1/UMPTb1 can only replace the main control board of the NE (BTS3900 WCDMA/BTS3900) serving UMTS. An SRAN7.0 UMPTa2 can only replace the main control board of the NE (BTS3900 LTE/BTS3900) serving LTE.


  • It is recommended that a used main control board not serve as a spare part for replacing a faulty main control board.


3. An ESD wrist strap or a pair of ESD gloves and an M3 Phillips screwdriver are available.


4. Associated personnel have gained permission to access a site and have obtained the required key.


5. The USB port on the main control board has been enabled when a USB flash drive is used to restore software and configurations.


CONTEXT


1. The section describes how to replace a UMPT that functions as the active board. To replace a UMPT that functions as the standby board, you only need to replace the hardware by performing steps 2 to 8), without the need for software configuration.


2. Replacing the UMPT has the following impacts on the base station:


  • If no standby UMPT is configured in a single-mode base station or co-MPT multimode base station, replacing a UMPT interrupts all services carried by the base station. Therefore, a UMPT must be replaced within 10 minutes.


  • If a separate-MPT multimode base station supports co-transmission and the shared ports for co-transmission are on the UMPT, replacing the UMPT will interrupt the services of the peer mode. Typical scenario: The GU dual-mode base station supports co-transmission over IP through the Ethernet link on the UMPT. The GSM data is transmitted through the interconnected FE ports.


  • For a separate-MPT multimode base station in dual-star topology, replacing the UMPT that works in UMTS mode may decrease the rate of GSM or LTE data services. However, the voice services will not be affected. Replacing the UMPT that works in LTE mode may decrease the rate of GSM or UMTS data services. However, the voice services will not be affected. Replacing the UMPT that works in GSM mode may interrupt the data or voice services of UMTS or LTE mode.


3. In separate-MPT scenarios where each mode uses independent transmission, UMTS uses ATM transmission, the UTRP provides transmission ports, and the peer mode is deployed on a UMPT but the UMPT has not been activated, focus on the following when replacing the main control board serving UMTS:


  • If the slot No. for the main control board in the NodeB is not configured on the RNC, first remove the main control board of the peer mode, replace the main control board and restore software and configurations, and then insert the main control board of the peer mode.


  • If the IP address of the NodeB and the slot No. for the main control board in the NodeB have been configured on the RNC, directly replace the UMTS and restore software and configurations.


4. The UMPT is hot-swappable.


5. The following figure shows the position of the UMPT in the BBU.

PROCESS


The following figure shows the process for replacing the UMPT.

  • To mitigate security risks, users must obtain corresponding permission before exporting NE data.

  • Users can use a USB flash drive only to restore unencrypted data, but can use the LMT or U2000 to restore all types of data (including encrypted data).

PROCEDURE


Perform the following operations remotely.


The transport network supports the automatic establishment of OM channels.


The time for restoring software and configurations remotely is longer than that for restoring software and configurations locally.


The device required by local commissioning is available: a PC (commissioning using the LMT) or USB flash drive (commissioning using a USB flash drive).


Ensure that the USB port on the main control board has been enabled.


1. Upgrade the software. For details, see Upgrading NE Software and Installing NE Patches in Task-based Mode.


2. Upgrade a configuration file. For details, see Restoring NE Data.


3. After the base station restarts, run the LST VER command to check whether all modes have been loaded with the software of the target version. If not, run the DLD SOFTWARE command to redownload the software and then run the ACT SOFTWARE command to activate the software.


4. Prepare the software package.


5. Uploading a Commissioning License (When LTE Services are to be Enabled).


6. Prepare the configuration data file.


7. Create the NE commissioning task.


8. Start the NE commissioning task. For information how to prepare software package and configuration data file, see Preparing the Software Package and Configuration Data File.

10. Back up configuration data by using the USB flash drive. For details about the USB flash drive used for a NodeB, eNodeB, or BTS3900, see Preparing the USB Flash Drive for Local Commissioning (for the NodeB, eNodeB, and BTS3900). For details about the USB flash drive used for a GBTS. see Preparing the USB Flash Drive for Local Commissioning (for the GBTS).


11. Uploading a Commissioning License (When LTE Services are to be Enabled).


12. If the backup data is required to restore NE data through the U2000, you need to back up data and upload the data to the U2000. If there is no NE backup file on the local PC, see Manually Backing Up NE Data. If there is an NE backup file, upload the file to the OSS server. For details, see uploading NE backup files.


13. If the data stored on the CME is used to restore NE data, backup date is not required. You only need to prepare configuration data file.


14. For an eNodeB, run ULD LICENSE to upload a license file to the server.


15. Query alarms reported by the base station according to the instructions in Browsing Current Alarms.


16. Ask field engineers to prepare dialing test tools. For details, see Preparing Dialing Test Tools.


17. Block all cells under the base station.

In a multimode base station, the operation of blocking the related cells must be performed on all modes involved.

The base station is a GBTS

Run the LST GCELL command on the BSC to query the administrative state of the cells under the base station. Then, run the SET GCELLADMSTAT command with the ADMSTAT parameter set to LOCK to block all cells under the base station.

The base station is an eGBTS

Run the BLK GLOCELL command on the eGBTS to block all cells under the eGBTS.

The base station is a NodeB

Run the BLK ULOCELL command on the NodeB to block all cells under the NodeB.

The base station is an eNodeB

Run the BLK CELL command on the eNodeB to block all cells under the eNodeB.


  1. Optional: Back up data configuration files and the license.



  2. Prepare for restoring software and configuration data.

    Prepare for restoring software and configuration data remotely.

    You need to restore software and configurations by means of a self-deployment task on the U2000


    You need to restore NE software and configurations manually

    Download the software package of the target version from http://support.huawei.com, and upload the software package from the OSS client to the OSS server or download the software package to the NE. For details, see Transferring NE Files.


    Prepare for restoring software and configuration data locally.

    You need to conduct commissioning using the LMT


    You need to conduct commissioning using a USB flash drive



  3. Ask field engineers to replace the board locally.

  4. Wait until the site engineer complete replacing boards.

  5. If preparations for locally restoring of software and configuration data have been finished before the replacement, perform the following operations:

    If the BBU is configured with a UTRPc, local reset of the software and configurations is still supported, whereas remote base station deployment using the U2000 is not supported.

    You need to restore software and configurations by means of a self-deployment task on the U2000

    Start a commissioning task and monitor the task status. For details, see Monitoring the Commissioning Task. If the NE commissioning task enters the auto-configuration phase, the base station has finished restoring the software and configurations.

  6. Optional: For an eNodeB, load a commercial license according to the instructions in Installing a Stand-Alone License.

  7. Unblock all cells under the base station.

    In a multimode base station, the cells of each mode must be unblocked.

    If...

    Then...

    The base station is a GBTS

    Run the SET GCELLADMSTAT command and set ADMSTAT to UNLOCK to unblock all cells of the base station.

    The base station is an eGBTS

    Run the UBL GLOCELL command on the eGBTS to unblock all cells under the eGBTS.

    The base station is a NodeB

    Run the UBL ULOCELL command on the NodeB to unblock all cells under the NodeB.

    The base station is an eNodeB

    On the eNodeB, run the UBL CELL command to unblock all cells under the eNodeB.


  8. Perform the operation of Browsing Current Alarms to compare the alarms queried with the alarms queried before the replacement. Then handle the added alarms according to the instructions in 3900 Series Base Station Alarm Reference.

  9. Synchronize the inventory information manually according to the instructions in Synchronizing Inventory Data.

  10. Inform the site engineer that the remote operations are completed, and ask the site engineer to verify the services.

Perform the following operations locally.

  • When removing a board, hold the board with both hands and remove it from the subrack slowly.

  • When transporting a board, hold the board with both hands.

    Loading a Software Package or Data Configuration Files From a USB Flash Drive

  2. After the base station restarts, run the LST VER command to check whether all modes have been loaded with the software of the target version. If not, run the DLD SOFTWARE command to redownload the software and then run the ACT SOFTWARE command to activate the software.

  1. Run DLD CFGFILE to download configuration files from the FTP server to the base station.

  2. Download and activate a configuration file, software, and a license (optional). For details, see Loading Software, Data Configuration File.

  1. Receive the instruction from the remote engineer and prepare to replace the board.

  2. Put on an ESD wrist strap or a pair of ESD gloves.

    Take proper ESD protection measures, for example, put on an ESD wrist strap or a pair of ESD gloves, to prevent electrostatic damage to the boards, modules, or other electronic components.


  3. Record all the cable connections on the panel of the module to be replaced.

  4. Remove the transmission cable from the UMPT. If a surge protection board is configured, the surge protection transfer cable also needs to be removed, as shown in the following figure.

  5. Loosen the two M3 screws on the panel, raise the ejector lever, and pull out the UMPT, as shown in the following figure.

  6. Set the DIP switches on the new board to the same as the settings of the DIP switches on the replaced board. For details, see UMPT.

  7. Install the new board, lower the ejector levers, tighten the screws on the board panel to 0.6 N·m (5.31 lbf·in.), and reconnect the cables.

    Remove and install a BBU board strictly according to instructions in Boards Operation Regulations.


  8. Check the status of the new board by observing the status of indicators. For details about the status of the indicators, see UMPT.

  9. If preparations for remotely restoring of software and configuration data have been finished before the replacement, ask field engineers to restore software and configuration data. If preparations for locally restoring of software and configuration data have been finished before the replacement, perform the following operations:



  10. Take off the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves, and pack up all tools.

  11. After receiving the notification from remote engineers, perform the operation of Performing Service Tests.


FOLLOW-UP PROCEDURE


1. Place the replaced component in an ESD box or bag. Then, place the ESD box or bag into a foam-padded carton or the packing box of the new component.


2. Complete the fault form with detailed information about the replaced component.


3. Contact your local Huawei office to handle the faulty component.
