Configuring a BRI Trunk

This post describes the procedure on how to configure a Basic Rate Interface (BRI) trunk through which the unified gateway is connected to the ISDN network. Only U1911/U1960/U1981 support BRI trunks.

Prerequisites

1. A BTU board has been configured. For details, see Configuring Boards.

2. The BTU board has been connected to the ISDN network through a straight-through cable.

Context

A BRI trunk is a digital circuit trunk. A straight-through cable is used as a BRI trunk line for connecting the unified gateway to the network termination (NT), through which the unified gateway is connected to the ISDN network.

A BRI trunk is required for intra-office users to make outgoing calls to outer-office ISDN users. During the BRI configuration, an outgoing prefix needs to be selected.

The unified gateway determines whether to use the BRI trunk for routing calls to the outside of the office. U1911 supports a maximum of two BTU boards; U1960 supports six and U1981 supports five, each of which supports four BRI trunks.

A BRI trunk supports two voice channels, which means a BRI trunk supports at most two concurrent calls. The unified gateway selects a voice channel by polling.

NOTICE:

1. The BRI link only with its position being User Side can be used for interconnection with the NT. The position of the BRI trunk for the NT must be set to Network Side; otherwise, the voice services are unavailable.

2. Currently only the point-to-point (P2P) mode is supported.

Scenario

This section describes how to configure a BRI trunk.

1. Add a BRI trunk, with Link No being 0, Port being 0, and Position being User Side.

2. Configure the BRI dedicated line for intra-office users.

Procedure

1. Log in to the web management system. For details, see Logging In to the Web Management System.

2. Configure the BRI trunk data.

a) Choose Trunk > Trunk Configuration > BRI.

NOTE:

By default, the system has a local office Local.

b) In the BRI trunk configuration area, click Add A Peer Office.

c) The point:0 blue icon indicating the peer device is displayed.

d) Click point:0 or the line connecting point:0 to the local office.

e) On the page that is displayed, click Create.

f) Set parameters according to the actual data plan.

Table 1 describes the key parameters displayed on the page. For a detailed description about the parameters, see the Web Management System Online Help.

Table 1 Key parameter description

Parameter

Description

Link No

Link number, which uniquely identifies a link. The value of this parameter ranges from 0 to 255.

Position

Position of a BRI trunk. Currently, the BRI trunk only with its position being User Side can be used for interconnection with the peer device. Position of the BRI trunk must be set to Network Side for the peer device.

Link Timeslot

Circuit number of the signaling link. This parameter has a fixed value of 3, and the value change is not required.

Send the Restart Message

Indicates whether to send a restart message to the peer device for a program restart when an exception occurs on the link with the peer device. The default value is No.

Trunk Direction

Call connection direction of the trunk. The default value is Bidirectional.
  • Incoming: Only incoming calls are supported.
  • Outgoing: Only outgoing calls are supported.
  • Bidirectional: Both incoming and outgoing calls are supported.

g) Click OK.

After the BRI trunk is configured, the line between the local device and the peer device turns green, indicating a successful configuration.

1. Configure a BRI dedicated line.

Configure a BRI dedicated line for user number 7000. The following assumes that outgoing prefix 1, office route 1, and office route selection code 1 have been configured for the dedicated line. Configure call source 1, add user 7000 to this call source, and bind circuit 1 in slot 1 to office route 0.

2. Log in to the unified gateway using the CLI. For details, see Logging In to the unified gateway Using the CLI.

3. Add call source 1.

config add callsource no 1

4. Add user 7000 to call source 1.

config modify subscriber dn 7000 callsourceno 1

5. Add rerouting information, which binds call source 1 and office route 0.

config add routeanalysis officeselectcode 1 callsourceno 1 officeno 0

6. Bind BRI circuit 1 and office route 0.

config modify board slot 1 type btu tkcinboard 1 officeno.

NOTE:

The relationships between the four BRI S/T ports and circuits on the BTU board are as follows:

a) the BRI S/T-1 port corresponds to circuits 0 and 1.

b) the BRI S/T-2 port corresponds to circuits 32 and 33.

c) the BRI S/T-3 port corresponds to circuits 64 and 65.

d) the BRI S/T-4 port corresponds to circuits 96 and 97.

7. Save the data: save.

8. Configure a clock source. For details, see Configuring a Clock Source.

9. Click Data Save in the upper right corner of the web management system.

NOTICE:

The unsaved configurations will be deleted after the device is restarted.

Verification

Task

Operation

Result

Verify the trunk-based device interconnection.

A user in the local office calls a user in the peer office.

The call is successfully set up.
