How to calculate the optical line insertion loss in DWDM system

 Hello, everyone!

Today, I'd like to share with you how to calculate the optical line insertion loss in DWDM system,

Please see the following picture which is just typical network connection as e.g:


Notice:For each board insertion loss(IL) between different port we can get from the product document.

There's also another insertion loss need to be calculate like patch cord,connector,attenoutor and so on.


The optical fiber insertion loss

Option-1: optical fiber insertion loss= OAU(out) – VOA(value) - 2*FIU(IL) – OBU(IN) - other IL

Option-2:optical fiber insertion loss= site-A:AST2(TM) – 2*FIU(IL) – site-B:AST2(RM) - other IL


Normally both direction IL different should be within 2 dBm
