How OTN Networks Work


OTN transparently encapsulates each client's payload in a container for transmission over optical networks while preserving the client's original architecture, timing and management information. and digital video plus “SONET/SDH” via a single optical transmission unit frame.


Since OTN is a completely transparent protocol, adapting existing services is very simple. OTN leaves existing OSS/BSS solutions as is, uses all available tools and automation, requires little or no retraining, and provides cost-effectiveness of OTN. Ease of implementation and simplicity for businesses a straightforward and unobtrusive solution to evolving network needs.


OTN-based backbones and central channels offer significant advantages over traditional networks based on WDM transmitters, including increased efficiency, reliability, and wavelength-based private services. IP-over-OTN infrastructure also provides better management and control. Reduce hops, increase service protection and reduce equipment acquisition costs.


In addition to scaling the network to 100G and beyond, OTN plays a key role in making the network an open and programmable platform, enabling transmission to be important as computing in SDCN.

  • By encapsulating each payload transparently in a container, OTN's Enhanced Multicast capabilities allow different types of traffic, such as storage, Ethernet, video, and SONET/SDH, to be transmitted over a single OTU frame, and maintains The client's original architecture, timing information, and management information within the container.


  • There are great advantages with “OTN” compared to traditional “WDM” networks, including increased efficiency and reliability, and with “OTN” networks it can be expanded to “100 GHz” and beyond, and it also plays an important role in making the network programmable, allowing transmission To become as important as computing and storage in smart data center networks.
