Today, I want to shortly write about internet speeds. It is a very popular topic today. Let’s get started.
User demands for internet speeds are constantly growing. New services are being introduced. A large number of FTTx solutions offer very high internet speeds. But the main question is how much internet speed do we really need. With the exception of business users, do we really need high speeds? 50 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 350 Mbps, 500 Mbps, 1 Gbps, or more?

What internet speed we need depends on our internet requirements and the number of users in our house (on one ONU device). If we watch SD (standard definition) movies, we need a minimum speed of 3 Mbps, HD requires 5 to 8 Mbps, while UHD 4K requires a minimum of 25 Mbps. If we use one-on-one chat on Skype, the required internet speed is from 30 to 100 kbps. For video calls, we have to internet speed of about 8 Mbps.
Typical internet speeds are shown in table 1. After that, we can see table 2, where we can see internet speed values for video streaming.

These are all estimated values, in order to ensure safe internet speed, it is recommended to take double internet speed. If we have several members in the house and we know the requirements, we can roughly calculate the internet speed. We can conclude that most homes will be satisfied with internet speed up to 100 Mbps.
For
serious gamers, in addition to speed downstream and upstream,
latency is also very important. Today there are a number of popular
online games such as FIFA, Minecraft, Call of Duty, DOTA 2, Counter Strike,
Starcraft 2, Battlefield, World of Tanks, etc. If the latency is high, there are real problems with
online games - the player cannot take the time to react or play.
Today, high internet speeds are required by companies, faculties, schools, government, airports, casinos, serious online gamers and streamers, etc.
