We all come from different backgrounds and cultures. I'm sure that there is an amount of equally interesting customs in your countries!
What are some of the most important ones during the holidays?
I'll start.
Here are some of the most interesting customs in Romania:
Remembrance of the Dead - special custom which takes place on a Saturday in December. It's meant to commemorate the loved ones. People celebrate by eating traditional dishes. One of the most important ones is a dish prepared with pork and gelatine.
2. The Călușari - a group of dancers dressed in traditional clothes who practice a ritual acrobatic dance. Their dance is believed to keep the evil spirits away. In their dance, the Călușari carried clubs and a sword, as well as a flag and a wooden horsehead.
3. The Boboteaza - a christian holiday celebrated on January 6th which marks the end of the Christmas holidays. During this time, churches purify the nearby waters with crosses and basil bouquets. One popular custom is the one of throwing a cross in a frozen lake. People who swim and reach the cross are believed to be blessed all year long.
