The group call service, as the major service on GSM-R networks, includes the general group call, broadcast, and emergency call. The procedure for group calls is the same as that for broadcast, but the procedure for emergency calls slightly differs from that of general group calls.

With regards to the procedure, group calls can be classified into dispatcher-initiated group call, Voice Group Call Service (VGCS) in which the uplink channels are occupied, subscriber-initiated group call in which uplink channels are released and downlink detection.


The following figure shows the signaling tracing of a single MS that initiates the group call.
