In GPON Netwrok, Upstream and Downstream transmission is implemented by using wavelength multiplxing (WDM) technology to transmit different wavelengths in upstream and downstream directions on the same ODN network, i.e. a single fiber carries data of different wavelengths in the upstream and downstream directions at the same time.

In GPON Upstream Transmission, time division multiplexing (TDM) is used to transmit data in upstream direction. However, in GPON Downstream Transmission, the data is transmitted in Broadcast Mode.
