Hello, everyone!

Today, I will continue to explain a new topic – GPON OLT basic operations. Now, in this article, I will explain the out-band configuration process. Let’s get started.

In the next figure, on the left side, we can see network topology. We can see how to connect a PC to OLT. I will talk about this in detail in this article. And on the right side in the same figure, there is IP address planning. This is an example of an out-band configuration process.

out-band

Non-service channels are used in this method of maintenance. The PC connects to the OLT (control board) on the ETH port using a UTP crossover cable. The IP address of the out-band maintenance port needs to be configured. The PC should be on the same network. In the following figure, we can see the out-band configuration process diagram.

out-band

The first step in the out-band management procedure is to enter the maintenance network port mode:

TEST(config)#interface meth 0

This command is used when we need to configure parameters such as IP protocol, firewall, and duplex status of this port.

Then, we have to set the IP address of the maintenance network port:

TEST(config-if-meth0)#ip address 10.10.X.X 255.255.255.0

The command for exit from this mode:

TEST(config-if-meth0)#quit.

If our PC is not directly connected to the OLT, but via a router. The last step is to add a route for out-band management. The next command is a command for this action:

TEST(config)#ip route-static 10.10.X.X 10.10.X.X

This is a command to configure a static route, ie static routing. This method of routing is used for simple networks. This reduces the load on the device, but any changes to the network require a manual route change. If we want to delete a static route we use the following command: undo ip route-static. The default route has an IP address and a 0.0.0.0 mask. The default route is often used in simple networks. When entering a static route, we also need to enter the transmission interface or next-hop address.

This is the end of this article. I will explain this topic in the next article >> GPON OLT Basic Operations (8)

Thank you!
