GNS3 as an alternative to eNSP

Hello,

I've been searching for a tool I could use for hands-on practice to complement the free training available at iLearningX and found eNSP. But I later found out (upon searching for where I can download it) that this in-house tool of Huawei is pretty much dead (EOS as of end of 2019 based on what I found). This post says it is currently "taken down for improvement...for a newer version" according to @umaryaqub and no definite date on when that will happen.

I'm trying to prepare for HCIA, and I prefer to learn with hands-on rather than just watch a video and take down notes. I've seen some posts about using EVE-NG, but the minimum system requirements of that simulator is too high for the computers I have available for use.

Now I found GNS3, which works perfectly on a spare laptop running Linux, but there are new hurdles: the appliance and, possibly, the license. GNS3 requires that the user obtain the image of the appliance before it can be added, and obviously that will require a license. I've been searching in the downloads section of Huawei's website and I could only find patches. I asked around in the GNS3 community and I was told that the following appliances are compatible with that simulator:

  • AR1000v

  • CE12800

  • NE40C

  • USG6000V

The GNS3 community also advised to be on the lookout for an "evaluation edition" or "trial license" to use on the image for GNS3 simulation.

So now I'm here, posting and asking for help on two things:

  1. Does anyone know where I could download the images for the appliances above? Or perhaps images of the appliances covered in HCIA training? (official sources are preferred)

  2. Does Huawei provide "evaluation" or "trial" licenses to use with such images? If so, where can I get those?

I hope someone could help. Learning without labs is pretty useless, regardless if it's associate level or expert level certification you are preparing for. With eNSP dead, I'm relying heavily on the possibility of using GNS3 to learn hands-on with Huawei. If I can't make this work, I guess I'll just have to choose training for Cisco (VIRL labs, paid), Juniper (vLabs, free) or MikroTik (cloud-hosted router works in GNS3, free/demo license also available).

So any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
The eNSP is no longer supported on the official website.
The following post shares the eNSP software.

I think the question really was, "Where can we find a downloadable image of the listed routers so an appliance can be created in GNS3?"

I found this in the forum

Hello @user_3445655

Good news update on 9/18 2020. More eNSP images could be used in the EVE-NG. A forum user posted the thread to import the eNSP image into the EVE-NG. Not only the USG firewall and AR1000V, but also the CE12800, NE40E, NE5000 and CX600.

You can check the postRun CE12800/NE40E in EVE-NG

Well, actually, eNSP images cannot be used in EVE-NG, except the USG6000V and AR1000V.

To enable the AR1000V in EVE-NG, you can follow the steps below,

SSH to EVE and login as root, from cli and create image directory:mkdir opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/huaweiar1k-5.170

Upload the var_allinone.img image to the EVE /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/huaweiar1k-5.170/ using, for example, FileZilla or WinSCP.

From cli go to created directory: cd /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/huaweiar1k-5.170/

Rename source original filename to virtioa.qcow2: mv var_allinone.img hda.qcow2

Fix permissions /opt/unetlab/wrappers/unl_wrapper -a fixpermissions

For USG6000V, please check steps below:

Open or unzip USG6000v-hda.7z file to obtain USG6000v-hda.qcow2 source file.

SSH to EVE and login as root, from cli and create image directory: mkdir /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/huaweiusg6kv-5.1.6

Upload the USG6000v-hda.qcow2 image to the EVE /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/huaweiusg6kv-5.1.6/ using, for example, FileZilla or WinSCP.

From cli go to created directory: cd /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/huaweiusg6kv-5.1.6/

Rename source original filename to hda.qcow2: mv USG6000v-hda.qcow2 hda.qcow2

Fix permissions /opt/unetlab/wrappers/unl_wrapper -a fixpermissions

It was mentioned that the user could not use EVE-NG because his computer could not meet the system requirements. If you have information on how to import eNSP images into GNS3, maybe that would be more helpful.
Hi,

You can download the unofficial eNSP from here:

I hope it helps.
