In the future, the backbone network will present the characteristics of all-optical intellectualization. The network should have the functions that traditional transmission equipment does not have, such as multi-service support, high capacity, easy expansion and so on. Therefore, the new generation of optical transmission equipment still has huge market substitution space. The next step in the development of optical communication technology is still high-speed, large capacity, while actively developing optical access network. Thus, optical transmission equipment and optical access network are closely linked, but also developed synchronously.
In the aspect of optical access network, how to solve the problem of FTTH, how to reduce the cost of broadband integrated optical access, how to integrate and distribute services in optical access network, and how to manage the network of access network and its relationship with switch management need to be solved urgently. Another key point is the combination of optical communication technology and IP technology. How to adapt optical communication to the development of the Internet, the short-term, medium-term and long-term goals of IP over SDH and IP over WDM need to be studied in depth.
