Disaster Recovery Overview


A disaster recovery (DR) system provides a computer information system with an environment to withstand disasters. When a natural disaster, such as the fire, flood, earthquake, and war, or artificial damage, such as the computer crime, virus, power failure, network/communication failure, hardware/software error, and disoperation, occurs on the computer system, the DR system can ensure security of user data (data DR) and application service continuity (service DR).

 

DR Requirements of FusionCloud Desktop Solution


  • The Desktop Cloud Solution must provide DR for the cloud platform as well as user VMs.

  • VDI has two application scenarios:

    • In call center scenario, each user VM runs the same operating system (OS) and application software. No user's personal data is stored on desktops.

    • In OA scenario, install applications based on their requirements and store documents and emails on their VMs


In the call center scenario, each user VM runs the same operating system (OS) and application software. No user's personal data is stored on desktops. The DR in the VDI scenario does not require data replication between the production site and the DR site. When the production site cannot provide services, a VM with the same applications installed as the VM in the production site is assigned from the DR site to the user so that the user can continue with services. The solution that does not provide data DR is called service DR. Service DR is relatively simple. Two service DR modes are available: client-based DR and global server load balance (GSLB) service DR. The main idea of the service DR is to assign VMs to a user from the production site and the DR site. When a disaster occurs, the GSLB or client switches to the DR site.

  • CloudClient, a component integrated with browser functions, is deployed on terminals. A user can configure the uniform resource locator (URL) of the WI on the CloudClient. When a user clicks the CloudClient, the CloudClient interacts with the WI by using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and displays the web login page for the user. If the DR function of the CloudClient is required, you can configure the URLs of the production site and the DR site on the CloudClient. When a user clicks the CloudClient to log in to a desktop, the CloudClient first logs in to the production site. When the production site is abnormal, the CloudClient logs in to the DR site.


  • Figure above shows the networking of the client-based service DR solution. One VDI system is deployed in each data center. To simplify illustration, Figure 3-1 shows only DR-related VDI infrastructure components, such as the vLB, WI, and active directory (AD). AD is deployed in the production site and the DR site. The standby AD synchronizes data from the active AD to ensure that a user can use the same password to log in to the WIs of different sites. Desktops are assigned from the production site and the DR site to a user. To ensure same user experience between two desktops, it is recommended that same applications be installed on the system disks of the two desktops.

 

GSLB Service DR Solution


  • In the GSLB service DR solution, the GSLB serves as the domain name server (DNS) of clients (including TCs and SCs). The GSLB periodically checks the health status of vLB in two data centers.

 Solution Overview

  • The CloudClient-based DR solution applies to small-scale and simple networks. In actual projects, load balancing must be implemented between two sites by using an algorithm, and a GSLB device is required to implement service DR.

  • In the GSLB service DR solution, the GSLB serves as the domain name server (DNS) of clients (including TCs and SCs). The GSLB periodically checks the health status of vLB in two data centers. When a user attempts to log in to a desktop from a client, the GSLB (DNS) resolves the URL of the data center to be logged in and returns the IP address of the preset data center. If the preferred data center is abnormal, the GSLB resolves the domain name of the client to the IP address of the DR center.

  • In the Huawei FusionCloud desktop solution, two GSLB load balancing methods are recommended: load balancing based on client geographical information (source IP address) and client IP address-based static hash algorithm. The two methods can meet load balancing requirements between two data centers. The first load balancing algorithm implements nearby access to data centers, ensuring user experience.

  • Application Scenarios

    • The GSLB service DR solution applies to scenarios where data DR is not required, such as customer service centers, customer service agents, and call centers. During service deployment, it is recommended that user VMs be provisioned from resource

 

UltraVR Array Replication DR Solution


  • The UltraVR array replication DR solution provided by the Huawei FusionCloud desktop is based on FusionSphere. It consists of three parts:

    • Data center DR switchover

    • User VM DR

    • FusionAccess desktop data DR


Data center DR switchover


When the production center is faulty, user logins are redirected to the DR center by using a DR mode. You can select the client-based service DR or GSLB service DR mode based on actual conditions. In general, CloudClient is used to check the vLB of data centers to implement DR for small sites, and GSLB is used to meet complex global load balancing requirements.


User VM DR


User VM DR adopts the UltraVR array replication DR solution of FusionSphere to recover DR VMs in the DR site when a disaster occurs. For details, see section 3.4.2 "Introduction to the UltraVR Array Replication VM DR.


FusionAccess desktop data DR


VDI infrastructure VMs have not adopted the UltraVR array replication DR solution. Instead, a set of VDI infrastructure VMs are constructed in the DR site, and desktop data is synchronized between the production site and the DR site through data synchronization at the application layer. When DR VMs in the DR site recover, VM IDs change. Therefore, FusionAccess needs to update the VM IDs in its database during desktop recovery to ensure that the VM power management function is available after a switchover.

 FusionCloud UltraVR replicates VM data in the production site to the DR site using the asynchronous remote replication function of Huawei storage. UltraVR replicates VM specifications and manages DR plans. When a disaster occurs, a DR switchover is automatically implemented based on the DR plan.


The UltraVR provides the following functions using the remote replication feature of storage devices:


Centralized recovery plan


Creates and manages recovery plans.

Automatically discovers and displays the VMs that are protected by the storage array, and supports flexible replication policies.

Maps VMs to the related resources (such as clusters, storage devices, or networks) on the switchover site.

Displays VM protection topology in an end-to-end manner, including the topological relationship and link status between production site > cloud platform in the production site > VMs in the production site > data storage > active LUN > production array > DR site > DR array > standby LUN.


Automatic switchover

Supports one-click start of the recovery plan.

 

UltraVR Array Replication DR Solution  Networking

 Figure above shows the networking of the UltraVR array replication DR solution. In addition to ports connecting to hosts for services, each IP SAN device provides two ports for remote replication. The network connections between the production site and the DR site are used for array replication between SAN devices, and communications between management planes and between service planes. (Data synchronization between two FusionCloud desktop systems is implemented through the service plane.)
