Hello, everyone!

Today, I would like to share with you a First part article article on FTTH-PON networks – Comparison of P2P and PON networks.

Regardless of the fact that FTTH-PON technology dominates the research, which may be characterized by its comparative complexity and various standards indicated in below Table 1, global implementations are balanced almost 50–50 among P2P and PON networks.

Remarked: (i) XG-PON too is regarded as NG-PON1;

(ii) ITU-T Recommendations are provided in series, e.g., G.987, G.987.1, and so forth;

(iii) all IEEE standards, which were once distinguishable, have become part of 802.3;

(iv) date of standardization refers to first document;

(v) GPON capacity data refer to dominant "recommended method" variant.

Table 1 describes the correlation of FTTH-PON systems that are currently in use or are scheduled for implementation.

Both have advantages and disadvantages, and an investor should cautiously select the best solution based on local circumstances.

Although costly, properly designed passive fiber infrastructure does have a 40-year life expectancy, therefore network technology selection has long-term implications.

The following are some of the relative benefits of FTTH-P2P technology:

–Flexibility: subscriber loops are entirely distinct; they can work with various hardware, wavelengths, bit rates, and so on; and they can be updated arbitrarily as required.

- Data security: data is delivered from the OLT to a single ONT and is not available to anybody else.

- Unbundling: Single fiber loops could be rented to just about any operator and used with whatever kind of transmission systems.

- Fibers could be redirected by the operator for other purposes, such as backhaul and fronthaul lines to wireless base stations, Ethernet connections to corporate clients, and so on.

- Since there is no splitting, there is less loss of subscriber loops.

- Consumer distances are only restricted by power and distribution allowance.

- Simple subscriber loop diagnostics
