Since we have now learned a bit about the definition WLAN as well as its architectures and protocols, this section will go into detail on the hardware involved in running a WLAN.

A WLAN consists of two hardware components: an access controller (AC) and an access point (AP). The following paragraphs describe Huawei AC and AP products in detail.

At present, Huawei has three types of ACs: AC6005, AC6605, and ACU2.

AC6005:

The AC6005 provides a variety of ports to meet requirements in any given scenario. Most important among these are the eight GE ports. The AC6005 provides 20 Gbit/s switching capacity and 4 Gbit/s forwarding capacity. The AC6005 supports the power-over-Ethernet (PoE) function on all 8 ports simultaneously. This PoE capability can provide power to APs and other powered devices (PDs) connected to the AC.

The AC6005 adopts the following reliability designs to ensure long-term operation:

  • Port backup based on the Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) or Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) 
  •  1+1 hot standby (HSB)

The AC6005 is easy to install and maintain, simplifying network deployment.

  •  The dimensions (height x width x depth) of the AC6005 are 43.6 mm x 320 mm x 233.6 mm and the AC6005 can be installed on a desk or in a standard IEC cabinet (19-inch).
  •  The built-in web system allows local GUI-based management. 
  •  The AC6005 can be managed by eSight that provides various northbound interfaces. 
  • The AC6005 supports the board temperature detector, which monitors the operating environment of the AC in real time.

The AC6005 adopts multiple energy-saving measures, including:

  • Low noise fans that can adjust the speed automatically, thus reducing noises in the system and power consumption of fans.
  • A feature that switches the AC to power-saving mode when no connected device is detected on a service interface (that is, the interface is idle).
  • Advanced highly integrated and energy-saving chips. With the help of the intelligent device management system, these chips not only improve system performance but also greatly the reduce power consumption of the entire system.

AC6605:

The AC6605 provides the following features:

  • Integrated design
    An AC6605 can function as an access or aggregation device to provide wired access services and function as a management device to control STA access. 
  •  Large switching capacity
    An AC6605 has 24 GE interfaces and two 10GE interfaces. It provides 128 Gbit/s switching capacity and 10 Gbit/s forwarding capacity.
  • PoE
    The AC6605 supports the PoE function on 24 ports. This PoE capability can provide power to APs and other powered devices (PDs) connected to the AC.

The AC6605 adopts the following reliability designs to ensure long-term operation:

  •  Port backup based on the Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) or Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP)
  • Redundant AC/DC power supplies 
  •  Hot swappable power supplies
  • 1+1 HSB

  • The dimensions (H x W x D) of the AC6605 are 44.4 mm x 442 mm x 420 mm and the AC6605 can be installed in a standard IEC cabinet (19-inch). 
  •  Power supplies are hot swappable, facilitating maintenance.
  • The built-in web system allows local GUI-based management. 
  •  The AC6605 can be managed by eSight that provides various northbound interfaces. 
  •  The AC6605 supports the board temperature detector, which monitors the operating environment of the AC in real time.

ACU2:

The ACU2 can be installed on S7700, S9700, or S12700 switches and functions as a WLAN access controller (AC). The ACU2 is used to deploy WLANs on industry networks.
The ACU2 has the following characteristics:

  •  High access capacity and processing capability
    An ACU2 can manage a maximum of 2048 APs (packet forwarding over 2048 tunnels) and supports a maximum of 32K STAs.
    The ACU2 provides nearly 40 Gbit/s line-speed forwarding capacity. 
  •  Independent service unit, facilitating centralized deployment and capacity expansion
    The ACU2 provides access control capabilities on an enterprise wireless network. An aggregation switch with ACU2s provides both wireless and wired service capabilities, reducing footprints and cables in equipment rooms and lowering network construction costs.
    You can install multiple ACU2s on a switch to manage N x 1024 APs. (N is the number of ACU2s.)

According to the relevant application scenario, APs are classified as indoor settled APs, indoor distributed APs, or outdoor distributed APs.

Indoor settled APs are recommended in places with simple building structure, small size, dense users, and high capacity demands, such as small-size conference rooms, bars, and leisure centers. The APs can be flexibly deployed and work in both Fit AP and bridge mode.

Indoor APs are usually nice-looking because they have to meet stringent aesthetic requirements in indoor areas. For example, the AP2010DN is known as a wall plate AP, which is like a small plate and can blend into the wall.

Indoor distributed AP:

Indoor distributed APs are recommended in scenarios where the building area is large, users are dispersed, and an indoor distribution system is deployed, such as large-scale office buildings, business buildings, hotels, airports, and bus stations. The APs are connected to the indoor distribution system and provide wireless coverage.

Example: A hotel has multiple floors and each floor has many rooms. The customer requires good services at lower costs. Indoor distributed APs are the best choice. An indoor distribution system has already been deployed in the hotel to provide 2G and 3G coverage. One antenna is used to cover one or more rooms. Antennas are connected to indoor distributed APs through the indoor distribution system. One AP can serve one floor. Because indoor distributed AP extends antennas to rooms, APs are not needed in every individual room. The following figure shows an indoor WLAN using indoor distributed APs.

Outdoor distributed APs are recommended in scenarios with high-density users, for example, schools and large exhibition centers.
Outdoor distributed APs offer enhanced outdoor coverage performance and have IP67 protection capability to adapt to all weathers.
