Example for Configuring Interface Backup Between Ethernet Interfaces

This example applies to all versions and AR routers.

Networking Requirements

As shown in Figure 1, RouterA connects to the IP network through Ethernet1/0/0 and Ethernet2/0/0.

Ethernet1/0/0 is the primary interface, and Ethernet2/0/0 is the backup interface.

  1. Configure RouterA.

  2. Verify the configuration.

    Run the display standby state command on RouterA to check the status of Ethernet1/0/0 and Ethernet2/0/0. Ethernet1/0/0 is in Up state and Ethernet2/0/0 is in standby state.

Configuration Notes

  • Only WAN interfaces support interface backup.
  • A primary interface can have a maximum of three backup interfaces.
  • An interface can be used as the backup interface of only one primary interface.
  • A maximum of 10 primary interfaces can be configured on a router simultaneously.
  • When the primary interface is faulty, backup interfaces are selected based on priorities. When backup interfaces have the same priority, they are selected in the configuration order.
