Ethernet OAM is short for Ethernet Operation, Administration and Maintenance.
Main functions of Ethernet OAM are divided into two parts:
Fault management
A device can detect the network connectivity by sending a detection packet periodically or manually.
Ethernet OAM can locate faults on the Ethernet by using methods similar to the Packet Internet Groper (ping) and traceroute on IP networks.
− When connectivity faults are detected, Ethernet OAM can trigger a protection switchover by working with the protection switchover protocol. This ensures service interruptions lasting less than 50 ms, providing carrier-class reliability.
Performance management
Performance management measures the packet loss ratio, delay, and jitter during packet transmission, and collects various types of traffic statistics. Performance management is usually implemented at the attachment circuit (AC) interface. With the OAM performance management tools, an ISP can monitor network running status, locate faults, and check whether the forwarding capability of the network complies with the Service Level Agreement (SLA) signed with users through the Network Management System (NMS).
Ethernet OAM improves Ethernet management and maintenance capabilities and guarantees a stable network.
Ethernet has been widely adopted as a Local Area Network (LAN) technology because its protocol is easy to implement and uses a relatively low-cost network architecture.
The original Ethernet was developed for LANs, which do not have high requirements for reliability and stability. Therefore, OAM is not considered in the Ethernet design. Lack of an OAM mechanism blocks the development of Ethernet. Ethernet OAM can meet the operation and maintenance requirements of Ethernet.
