eNSP & VirtualBox images hanging/not working

Good day, Community!

This post is about the issue of eNSP & VirtualBox images hanging/not working. Please see more details below.

Huawei eNSP

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

I'm trying to use eNSP for certification ends, but I can't get the included VirtualBox images to work.

I have the following setup:

  • Windows7, running as a VM inside KVM;

  • 2 vcpu's (with vmx extentions so nested VMs are possible);

  • 16GB memory;

  • Windows 7 fully updated;

  • 40GB SSD disk space assigned;

  • eNSP  V100R002C00B350 with included versions of winpcap, wireshark and VirtualBox (4.2.8).

eNSP is included with Virtualbox images for the AR routers, AC controllers, and Access points. All of them don't start in the eNSP environment (the normal router, switches and firewall do work), they all just seem to be hanging with ######. When looking in VirtualBOX the clone seems to be running, also when I connect to the pipe of the com port, I see that the Linux base is running.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

I have tried:

  • all 3xx verions of eNSP and their included images;

  • disabling firewalls;

  • re-registering devices;

  • reinstalling the OS;

  • a different OS version (Windows 2012);

  • a newer VirtualBox version;

  • converting the AR image to a qcow2 image and run directly in KVM, but I have sufficient access to the OS for debugging.

I can only conclude that for some situations there is something wrong between the eNSP enviroment and VirtualBOX, which I'm unable to fix myself. I'm guessing that eNSP can't read or access the serial output of the running AR/AC vm. The weird thing is that everything is working when I install eNSP in a simple VM (vmware) on my laptop, but I don't have sufficient memory available for a large testing environment.

Does anyone or Huawei have tips to solve this issue regarding eNSP & VirtualBox images hanging/not working? I'm happy to try beta images if needed.

Thanks for your reply, I saw you posting the same URL somewhere else as well. The only problem is that I can't read chinese. And given what I can read, I don't think it answers my question.

I believe I've done quite some researching already as you can read in the starting post. I'm not just saying "hey, it isn't working, fix it". ;-)

If you have additional information, please tell me.

Maybe you should check whether the Host-Only network adapter is created correctly.

if it exists in your network share center, you can enter "ping 192.168.56.1" in your local pc cmd window, then check the result.

if the result is "request timeout" or "unreachable", the adapter's ip is not set correctly, you should modify it's ip in virtualbox.

    1、Open VirtualBox

    2、click File - Preference - Network.

    3、if there is no Host-Only Ethernet Adapter, click the "Add host only" button

    4、modify or set the ip "192.168.56.1 255.255.255.0"

    5、click DHCP Server, uncheck "Enable Server"

    6、ping 192.168.56.1 in the local cmd window again, and check the result, if it is still failed, you need to unistall virtualbox and restart your pc , then reinstall virtualbox v4.2.8(the installation package is in the "eNSP" folder, inside "tools" ).

when done, check whether there are some "AR_CloneXXX" in virtualbox before you launch eNSP, delete them if they exist.

I found that on one of the chinese topics and did this yesterday. The only thing that wasn't correct was the enabled dhcp server, but that change didn't result in a working situation and the interface is pingable.

Can you explain how eNSP communicates with the VirtualBox VMs? Can I do some additional debugging on this?

the virtualbox version can not be the latest version, you'd better to install virtualbox v4.2.8.

why is there only AR_Base in your virtualbox ? if your eNSP is v1.2.00.350, the AR image must be corresponding.

when you start a AR device in eNSP, virtualbox will create a new AR_CloneXXXX, and it's ip is set 192.168.56.x (2,3,4,.......),

so you can ping 192.168.56.2 to check whether the ip is set correctly.

PS: I don't have sufficient rights to send email to HUAWEI's outside.

In order to troubleshoot the issue I tried the latest virtualbox version, but that didn't resolve it. Currently I'm just running all versions as provided. I just removed the other bases and didn't register them again. So everything is standard now.

I noticed that in my simple windows VM that the AR clone gets a 192.168.56.x address and communicates with the host-only adapter, but on my server this seems to be the issue. The AR_Clone is created and seems to boot, but it doesn't get an IP. I've captured some packets to see how this IP is provisioned, but this isn't entirely clear to me. Could you explain this? It seems that the Clone boots and the eNSP server broadcasts or multicasts settings to the client, is this correct?

PS: No problem, this forum is fine with me.

AR_Clone's ip is set by serial ports, so you can not capture any packet about assigning ip.

the first AR_Clone's ip is 192.168.56.2, the second is 56.3, so you can ping 192.168.56.2 to test whether the ip is set correctly.
