Hi there!
Their comparison is as follows:
1. The EDFA uses the principle of stimulated radiation of EDF fibers to amplify optical signals, and Raman amplification uses the Raman effect to convert and amplify optical signals.
2. The EDFA amplification bandwidth is limited (around 1550 nm, 193.414 THZ). Theoretically, Raman amplification can amplify all frequency bands.
3. The Raman amplifier uses common transmission fibers and does not require additional gain media. The Raman amplifier can be divided into distributed amplification (the amplification effect occurs within tens of kilometers of fibers) and centralized amplification based on the working distance. (Amplification occurs within the fiber within a few kilometers).
4. Raman amplification achieves low noise amplification, which is better than EDFA. However, the amplification gain is lower (about 3–15 dB) than EDFA and requires higher pump light (watt-level).
Thanks!
