Discussion topic I How are deepfakes likely to affect us?

Hi, Community!


You're probably all already aware of the deepfake technology: it involves the use of AI to create synthetic media (images, audio, video) in which someone appears to be doing or saying something which isn't true to reality. 


The technology is surely improving day by day, so it's becoming hard for more people to detect it as being fake...look at this recording, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLoI9hAX9dw 

How long do you think it will take until the deepfake technology falls into the wrong hands and how exactly do you see it being used?


On the other hand, how would you see it improving our daily lives?

this could be a dangerous thing in future, where u cannot tell rather its fake or real.

This technology is similar to all other technologies
A person can use it well or abuse it

From my point of view, it will be misused by people for blackmail purposes

I only see one advantage of this technology
We can make a video of dead people, we can bring back our memories with them

As far as the technology is concerned it is a great achievement. It's just getting better time to time. However, this is introduce some serious concerns to the society. It will introduce more harm than the usefulness. This has to be controlled.

Camera apps have become increasingly sophisticated. Users can elongate legs, remove pimples, add on animal ears and now, some can even create false videos that look very real. The technology used to create such digital content has quickly become accessible to the masses, and they are called “deepfakes.”

Deepfakes refer to manipulated videos, or other digital representations produced by sophisticated artificial intelligence, that yield fabricated images and sounds that appear to be real.

The word deepfake combines the terms “deep learning” and “fake,” and is a form of artificial intelligence.

In simplistic terms, deepfakes are falsified videos made by means of deep learning.

Deep learning is “a subset of AI,” and refers to arrangements of algorithms that can learn and make intelligent decisions on their own.

But the danger of that is “the technology can be used to make people believe something is real when it is not”.

This is an amazing technology but will be misused. It will be used for fun purpose or against someone for blackmailing, propaganda, as an alternate online identity (socket puppet). Can be used by mafia, hackers, criminals, state owned or private agencies for various purposes.

How many of us wants to see again our beloved who are no more in this world in such false videos or just for fun activity at the price of so much of these fraudulent and criminal activities?

This need some serious legislation and control .

The idea of controlling such a powerful tool who would be available to everybody is a bit troublesome.
How would this be controlled? By whom? Who would have this kind of authority and not get corrupted?

Such application must only be available to download from official App stores. Any video made must have mandatory (through legals) to have watermark on it even on the purchase PRO version to make it easily identify it. This is only solve the misuse by general public.

Now for non-ordinary peoples, state owned intelligence agencies It would be hard to implement it. But the developers must develop counter mechanism to tackle it. (advance app to sense the lip sing , movements to sense if it has been false version)

Yeah, I agree. This has also already been brought up by someone else. The issue here would be the one that it would get a bit tricky to choose the perfect form of team for control purposes.

Strict laws on misusing the technology
Separate window to launch such complains
Special cyber crime units for monitoring and investigation on the complains
Involvement of Interpol for international involvements
