Hello everyone!
In 2020, Huawei released SMC3.0. What are the differences between SMC3.0 and SMC2.0? Which SMC should we choose? Here's the answer!
Service Management Center (SMC): a videoconferencing service management system that manages videoconferencing devices (including GKs, MCUs and participant endpoints) and allocates video conferencing resources.
SMC2.0
SMC2.0 provides a unified management and centralized control solution, flexible and comprehensive third-party interfaces and various conference scheduling modes. With the mature video communication service management environment provided by SMC2.0, enterprise IT decision-makers, system administrators and users can efficiently collaborate and communicate with each other. This improves internal communication and decision-making efficiency and reduces operating costs.
Version evolution
SMC2.0 has six R versions since V100R001. However, services of other versions except V600R19 are discontinued.
Installation and deployment
SMC2.0 supports software-based deployment. SMC2.0 can be installed on a standard dedicated server (Huawei 2288H V5 server is recommended) or a VMware VM. The SMC2.0 can be hardened using security hardening scripts to ensure service security.
The following table lists the requirements for the software-based installation environment of the SMC2.0.
Table 1. Install environment for SMC2.0 software-based
Install environment | User Scenario | Configuration Requirements |
Standard dedicated servers, common PVs, VMware, or FusionSphere VM environments Standard dedicated servers include HP, IBM, and Huawei servers | The number of users is less than or equal to 1000 | CPU: 6 cores Memory: 12 GB Hard disk: 400 GB NIC: Gigabit Ethernet NIC(If the built-in SC is used for traversal between public and private networks, the server must be configured with two network adapters.) OS: WindowsServer 2012 R2 |
The number of users is greater than 1000 | CPU: 12 cores Memory: 30 GB Hard disk: 400 GB NIC: Gigabit Ethernet NIC(If the built-in SC is used for traversal between public and private networks, the server must be configured with two network adapters.) OS: WindowsServer 2012 R2 |
Networking
SMC2.0 applies to the CloudEC on-premises conference solution and CloudEC on-premises convergent conference solution.
In the CloudEC on-premises conference-only solution, SMC2.0 functions as a service management system to manage video conferencing devices and resources and schedules, initiates, schedules and controls conferences.
In the CloudEC on-premises convergent conference solution, SMC2.0, as a pure conference service management system, can interwork with UC and IPT services to hold convergent conferences.
SMC3.0
SMC3.0 provides unified management of videoconferencing devices on the entire network and unified scheduling of media resources. It provides easy-to-use conference control and visualized O&M management functions. It can connect to an intelligent conference server to manage facial data and configure sign-in, providing convenient operations for common users, conference administrators and system administrators.
There are two major versions (20 and 21) since the release of SMC3.0.
Networking
SMC3.0 is applicable to medium- and large-scale networks between the SMC and MCU and external network access of endpoints.
The SMC and MCU support medium-sized and large-sized networking scenarios with a maximum of 10,000 users and large-sized networking scenarios with a maximum of 1 million users.
The extranet access network ensures network security when users access extranet terminals.
Installation and deployment
SMC3.0 supports various deployments, including bare metal deployment, private cloud deployment, virtualized deployment and software-based deployment.
bare metal deployment - can be deployed on 2288X V5 servers in image package mode. They can exclusively use one server or be co-deployed with other VNFs;
private cloud deployment - can be deployed on HUAWEI CLOUD HCS 8.0. If an enterprise has a self-built HCS 8.0 HUAWEI CLOUD environment and sufficient cloud resources, you can deploy SMC ECSs;
virtualization deployment - can be deployed on the FusionCompute virtualization platform. If an enterprise has a self-built virtualization platform of FusionCompute 8.0.1 or later and sufficient virtualization resources, the SMC VM can be deployed;
software-based deployment - the software package can be installed on the Kirin OS based on the Kunpeng platform. To deploy the SMC, enterprises only need to provide servers and operating systems that meet specifications.
When SMC is deployed in bare metal mode, SMC can be deployed in a two-node cluster to improve reliability. In HCS 8.0 Huawei private cloud or FusionCompute deployment scenarios, SMC supports multiple nodes to form a cluster to improve service capacity and support up to 200,000 users and conference room provisioning.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SMC2.0 AND SMC3.0
SMC2.0 and SMC3.0 have different platform software capabilities. This feature mainly includes service NE mapping, terminal NE mapping, networking support, license management, user management, device management and hierarchical and domain-based management.
SMC2.0 and SMC3.0 have different platform software capabilities. Compared with SMC2.0, SMC3.0 does not support the functions of old devices and uses a unified inspection tool to manage devices. In addition, SMC3.0 greatly improves the capacity specifications, web response performance and service function performance. For example, SMC3.0 increases the maximum number of conference templates that can be managed from 1000 to 200,000.
Table 2. Differences between SMC2.0 and SMC3.0
Classification | Differences |
Differences in specifications | |
Differences in architectures | SMC3.0 supports easy deployment. Different services can be deployed in different containers to reduce service decoupling and ensure that the running resources of key services are not preempted. The service plane and management plane can be isolated and different sites can be used for login. |
Intelligence | Based on the AI server, the conferencing system adopts AI technologies such as facial recognition sign-in and on-screen name tag to improve conference operation experience and office efficiency. AI services include the facial recognition sign-in and on-screen name tag functions. |
Configuration | SMC2.0 allows you to configure multiple backup service areas for a service area. SMC3.0 supports only one backup service area. |
Conference | SMC3.0 doesn't support AD-hoc, it replaces it with the VMR function. |
Maintenance | All MCUs managed by the SMC2.0 are managed by the MCU resource management module. Different MCUs are aware of each other. MCUs of SMC3.0 are managed by service area. MCUs in different service areas are not aware of each other. |
CAN SMC2.0 UPGRADE TO SMC3.0?
No, it unfortunately cannot.
Thanks, that is all!
