Hello,

Today I will share with you the difference between BPON, GPON and EPON in a popular way.

I am a little PON. When I came to this world, I appeared as a new thing. Many people like me, and some don't like me. Now I have grown up slowly. However, there are still many things I don't understand. I don’t know why everyone calls me little PON, who are my parents? Where are they all? I don’t know, which brothers and sisters do I have? I don’t even know, why did I show up, I don’t know where I should go? I don't know, what do I look like? I was walking alone on the street to the destination. At this time, an elder with a childlike face came towards me and said to me: "Are you a little PON?" I said, "Yes, I am a little PON "The elder continued: "Now there are very important things to be handed over to you. You will find out when you go to the place called "Last Kilometer" in front.

The last mile village? The important thing? Etc... I was thinking, I still have a lot of questions to ask this elder. I looked up and found out why it disappeared. I looked around, but did not see the elder just now. Only what he said remains in my ears, the last mile village? There is nothing else to do. I try to find out how to get to the last mile village. I met many people along the way, and they all told me the same thing, saying that this matter is very important and I must do it. On the road I met two kind people named WAN (backbone network) and MAN (metropolitan area network). They took me to the entrance (access network) of the last mile village. There is a lively scene in the whole village.

Slowly I got acquainted with the people in the village.

What I want to tell you is that there are three children in this village whose names are very similar to mine. They belong to two families, and their parents are very authoritative people in the village. APON and GPON are brothers. APON is 10 years old (born in 1995). Some people say he is 7 years old and GPON is 4 years old. Their father is ITU-T and their mother is FSAN (Full Service Access Network). In the year GPON was born (2001), their parents changed the name of APON to BPON (Broadband Passive Optical Network). There is another named EPON. He was born in 2000. He is 5 years old this year. EPON’s father is IEEE and his mother is EFM (Ethernet in the First Mile). EPON is closely related to a person named Ethernet, and Ethernet is in the village. The sphere of influence outside the village is very wide, so EPON is also very popular. Although GPON is the youngest, his birth is pinned on the wishes of many people in this village. The biggest feature of BPON, EPON, and GPON is that they all have a unique method to help people in the village communicate with the outside world. It is precisely because of their expertise that people in the last mile village will rely on them to exchange information with each other in the future.

Although ITU-T, FSAN, and IEEE are all authoritative figures here, they all had a period of apprenticeship and art experience. FSAN has the most masters, probably more than 50, including Verizon, Bellsouth, BT, France Telecom, Korea Telecom; Agere; OKI; FlexLight; Fujitsu; Infineon; Intel and so on.

The topic returned to my three brothers and friends with the same name. Gradually, when the people in the last mile village have any information to communicate with the world outside the village, they all use B, E, and GPON. Each of these 3PON prodigies has a magical power. But they will gather the things that need to be transmitted from the villages to a place called OLT (this is a capable stuff), and then spread it out from there. The PON brothers also prepared a very convenient box for each family, named ONU. As long as each company has news to communicate with the outside world, it can only put the information in the ONU, and PONs will be responsible for collecting it frequently and regularly. Slowly, the small PON found that the PON brothers would transfer the things collected from a certain number (16/32/64/128) of ONU boxes to a collection point OLT through a dedicated pipe (called Fiber). Then the OLT will send them to a pipeline outside the village according to certain rules. Of course, this transmission is bidirectional, and external information can also be transmitted from the OLT to each ONU through this network. The PON brothers placed a Passive Optical Splitter device in the middle for distribution and collection. The feature of their set of methods is that the Passive Optical Splitter is used in the transmission process, so that one OLT can be responsible for many ONUs (point-to-multipoint), saving OLT and pipeline Fiber, and if each ONU is directly connected to the OLT with pipes, a lot of OLTs (the same number) (point-to-point) are required. More importantly, the Passive Optical Splitter does not require energy supply.

Later, little PON slowly learned that it turned out that the skills of B, E, and GPON were derived from their parents FSAN, ITU-T, IEEE, etc. FSAN, ITU-T, IEEE will continue to give their children some secrets. These secrets have code names, and the secret code of ITU-T for BPON is G. 983; The secret code for GPON is: G. 984; IEEE gave EPON: 802.3ah. And these secrets will have new versions in due course.

The secrets of B, G, and EPON above are different. BPON did not change its name. It used to be called APON. APON inherited the well-known ATM mantle, but the so-called high and low, ATM "score" is sophisticated and complicated. In addition to practical applications in several places called North America, Japan and Europe, No more development. ITU-T will adapt it to more situations in the future and rename it BPON. BPON is suitable for more people's needs, and the same system can do more things. At this point, EPON used the Ethernet, which has a sphere of influence in the last kilometer village, so its appearance is most in line with the current situation. However, some wise people say that compliance now is not equal to compliance in the future. People have more needs, and new rules for EPON to meet multiple needs have not yet come out. If you plan for a rainy day, GPON sees the future in this area, and focuses on faster and higher efficiency (meeting multiple needs and adapting to multiple services) to become G.984, which is supported by many application participants.

The three brothers, GPON, EPON, and BPON, took the cheats and concentrated on practicing. Although they are young, they are ambitious. They just want to become the boss of the last mile village and crowd out the other brothers. The two brothers GPON and EPON fought hardest. They looked down on each other and yelled at each other at every turn and accused each other. BPON is the oldest, but relatively honest. Brothers GPON and EPON did not take it seriously, because the main skill of BPON practice is ATM. ATM can receive voice, data IP, and video services at the same time, which is a very good skill. But when transferring IP data, ATM is too careful, so the efficiency is too low. We must know that IP has become more and more important in the hearts of the people in the village. Rules have been laid down. Whoever cannot deliver IP better will be eliminated. Moreover, ATM is relatively expensive to use, so it is not optimistic about the future. However, because BPON is more loyal and loyal, although it is not excellent but more comprehensive, the people in the village now rely on BPON the most. BPON is also greatly encouraged. Originally, its maximum downlink speed was 622Mb/s. Now it is in its father, with the encouragement of ITU -T, the maximum speed is also aimed at 125>Gb/s, I want to serve people better and not lag behind other brothers.
