Today I will share with you the difference between 1080p, 4K, and 8K, including what is 1080p/4K/8K, and what is their difference, and which is better.
1080p, 4k, 8k, these words, either with the letter K or with the letter P, so what is K? What's P?
In a broad sense, K and P do not refer to a fixed resolution, but to a horizontal number of pixel rows or a vertical number of pixel columns.
The original definition of P and K is very simple. P indicates progressive scanning. "n" P indicates that there are n rows of pixels in the vertical direction. For example, 1080p indicates that there are 1080 rows of pixels in the vertical direction. The original definition of "n"K is that there are about 1000 columns of pixels horizontally. For example, 1K is 1000, 2K is 2000, 4K is 4000, and so on.
However, what we're talking about in this article is 1920x1080 for 1080p, 2560x1440 for 2K, and 3,840x2,160 for 4K are all based on the TV aspect ratio of 16:9 (1.78:1).
What is 1080p?
Televisions have used vertical resolution to describe resolution in the past. Therefore, 1080 represents the vertical resolution. And almost all HDTVs have an aspect ratio of 1.78:1. (i.e., 16 x 9, aka "widescreen") , which means that its horizontal resolution is 1920 pixels (that is, 1920 × 1080). The foreign letter P means progressive scanning.
What is 2K?
2K resolution is a display with 2000 pixel resolution or a generic term for its content. The Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) defines the 2K resolution as 2560x1440.
Is 1080p 2K?
The 2K resolution indicates that the horizontal resolution of the screen is greater than 2000 pixels. The mainstream 2K resolution is 2560 x 1440.
The 1080p resolution is 1920 x 1080, the horizontal pixels do not reach more than 2000.
Obviously, 1080p is not 2K.
What is 4K?
4K almost means that the TV has 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, which is equivalent to doubling 1920 x 1080 in landscape and vertical to four times the 1080p standard.
What is 8K?
8K is a higher resolution than 4K—and that's it. 1080p screens have a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. 4K screens double those numbers to 3,840 by 2,160 and quadruple the number of pixels. 8K doubles the numbers again, to a resolution of 7,680 by 4,320. That's four times the number of pixels as 4K, which means it's 16 times that of a 1080p TV.

The main difference between 4K and 8K screens is the resolution which relates to the picture quality. 4K has double the resolution of an older 1080p screen, 2840 by 2160 pixels, and an 8K screen doubles that size to 7680 by 4320 pixels

As you can see from the table, their resolution varies greatly. The 1080p resolution is 2 megapixels (1920 x 1080), while 4K has more than 8 megapixels (3840 x 2160). As a result, 4K has about four times the resolution of 1080p and can produce a sharper picture. 8K has 30 megapixels, which makes it even more clear!
Which is better?
On the one hand, the higher the resolution, the better the picture quality. However, this is not absolute. The picture quality is also affected by other factors, such as the screen size, contrast ratio, decoding capability, and video source.
I want to introduce a word here, display resolution.

Display resolution (screen resolution) is the precision of the screen image, which refers to how many pixels the display can display. The display effect depends on the pixel density PPI (Pixels Per Inch) per unit area. The relationship between the PPI and the resolution may be expressed by using the following formula:
Generally, a display with a higher physical resolution has a smaller pixel distance from the Pixel Pitch, and a higher PPI. The PPI is the physical resolution of the display and is not affected by the media asset. Even if a 4K media asset is played on a display with the physical resolution of 1080p, the resolution of the 4K media asset can only be 1080p. So, on a 1080p monitor, 4K video doesn't look sharper than 1080p video.
